Serving The Blind

I was walking the other day and I saw two blind people struggling to walk down the street. That reminded me of a service we provide to blind people, and this same service can be offered throughout the country. The program is called Radio Home Visitor and it is run by radio station WRKC at King's College in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania. Volunteers read the local newspapers to the blind, visually impaired, and home-bound. It recently won an award for Best Community Volunteer Program at the Intercollegiate Broadcast System Conference held in New Your City. It is the nation's oldest reading service for the blind, visually impaired, and home-bound. The program has aired since 1974 and runs daily from 10 to noon. Readers include King's students and faculty, teachers from the area and other volunteers. Technology has made the job easier for program readers. The program reaches approximately 15,00 listeners daily. The focus is on hyper-local and community news and includes quirky stories and local obituaries. The program helps people stay in touch with their community, and letters from listeners explain how important it is to them everyday. Many simply enjoy the program. Would you like to implement this program in your area? Sources:https://www.citizensvoice.com/news/wrkc-s-radio-home-visitor-show-marks-40-years-on-air-1.1747216

Nice to know that you have a Society doing good work for visually diabled persons! I am from India, we have special schools for such people where they are taught in Braille and they are offered jobs also! Thanks!
