Bananas keep best if frozen if you first remove the peals and bag them.

The banana is a fruit with a very short shelf life. That is why stores sell them green. They ripen off the tree, very fast. Most often I buy only a few like 6 bananas at any given time. You will notice that they are sold in bunches that basically are numbered in the days of one week as the average consumer will figure they must be eaten within a week of purchase. If you buy more than you use, peal them, put them in a freezer bag and they should last a while longer, but mainly there is a way to dry them into banana chips and they are a very healthful anytime snack. Yum I love them bananas.

Hi Anthony. I will remember that. They do ripen fast. In my parents’ house, when my parents buy banana, it wont last for that long. We all eat it at once haha

They are best when yellow with brown dots on the peals. Best eaten at room temperature, not cold. They contain potassium which is a good nutrient.

@lookatdesktop yes. But the problem is it is all in our tummies by the time the brown dots appear.

@mlgen1037 , Well I understand it. My wife likes bananas but only in a smoothie mixed with vanilla ice cream and some blue berries with sugar and crushed ice. Some people have an allergy to bananas, as they can sometimes make sensitive individuals' tongue swell a little and the same might go for tomatoes and pineapple. Sorry about your tummy troubles with bananas. I get that. I can handle it but then I don't eat bananas every day.

I thought of buying a few yesterday as I've been having cramps in my calves at night lately. Sometimes that is a sign of needing potassium. But, they go brown quickly and I don't like them AT ALL once they start getting brown spots on them. The bunches were all huge so I skipped them entirely. I should have just bought a bottle of multivitamins instead.

@lookatdesktop , Take a look at this article from Live Strong dot com.
Whether as a snack on its own or in a peanut butter sandwich, fruit salad or bread, bananas are a staple in the American diet. Even most young children know in order to eat the banana, you first have to peel it. Then, most people toss the banana peel in th

I love bananas but they ripen so fast here that I don't always get them eaten in time, someone told me to put them in the fridge after purchasing and they will stay fresher longer. Maybe I should take them out of the peel first and just put them in there in a baggie. Have you ever kept them in the fridge?

@lookatdesktop I have a dehydrator so I make them in that but honey on them sounds good. That banana she was cutting in the video looked more like a potato.

@cintol , Yea, I thought it was strange looking, but take note of the fact that they were not sold locally in the US. Probably more or less native to the area. And some people mistake plantains for bananas. Bad mistake. You have to cook plantains to eat them or they might be actually not edible raw. Most people hardly buy plantains. I think they are actually cousins to the banana.

Yep. Sometimes a doctor puts you on a potassium restricted diet. For that reason it is good to keep tabs on your potassium levels.

We can buy a hand or a bunch of bananas here half ripe, we just hang it or leave in a fruit plate to ripen, it is finished before they over ripe.

@lookatdesktop banana here is never or rarely sold cold, it's always fresh and hung. We are a banana producing Nation and its one of our main export, there are so many kinds and varieties here, different sizes, shapes, taste, color and ripening time, we have green bananas that never turn yellow till they ripen and tastes entirely different from the yellow ones. We can buy bananas anywhere and almost any quantity, it's maybe the reason why I can't seem to identify with your problem, btw I have a cockatoo that eats those that are turning over ripe

When we sometimes buy them cold and green the never get yellow and I just don't like the way they ripen so I usually only buy them about fully ripe at places like Kroger, Walmart and Target. The only problem is, I always end up buying more than I eat and they do get ripe fast.

@just4him , Bananas are a wholesome snack food. They come packed in their own natural wrapper. Something very appealing about bananas, But they are slippery when you step on the peeling.

The banana tastes best when picked fresh and at room temperature. I like them that way on bread in a banana sandwich with real mayonnaise. It is a tradition for Southern US states like the Carolina states. But I like it even though I am a local Texas dude.

@lookatdesktop We can grow bananas in Florida, but generally only in the southern part of the state. And the bananas end up looking like dwarf bananas, as for some reason they don't get as big as the ones from south America. Plus, they don't taste all that great either. It's funny how certain types of plants or trees can only thrive in certain areas of the world.

Having them every day is best. I find it inconvenient to buy one a day but would prefer to have them growing in the back yard. I guess they can do this in tropical areas.
