At What Point Do You Upgrade Your Smartphone?

If you have a smartphone, do you upgrade when the new ones come out, or do you wait till they come down in price? I prefer to upgrade my iPhone when the one I'm currently using finally stops working. My iPhone 5 just quit, so I upgraded to a 7, even though people I know are using 10's. I did not feel like paying major money for the newest phone, and by now, the iPhone 7 came free with my contract renewal. It has some new features that my 5 did not have, and I'm quite happy with it. I don't like the fact that they took away the headphone jack, but otherwise, I love it. So, when do you choose to upgrade your smartphone?

I change phone only when I really need one because of some damage..

I upgrade when my phone is starting to fail. I had the iPhone 6 Plus, then upgraded to iPhone 7 Plus. So far my phone is doing fine. My fiance had a 5S and he upgraded to iPhone 8 Plus. My parents had the iPhone 5 and then upgraded to iPhone 6 Plus (both). So it just depends how long the phone seems to last before upgrading.
