Pinch me! This can't be true - England 2 - Sweden 0

Before the World Cup started most of the English public were not expecting it to take long before we'd be out and making excuses all over again. I was born in 1965, the year before England won the world cup and they've never come close to any kind of glory since. Every 4 years we go through the ritual disappointment - interspersed with the same for the European Championships every 4 years in between. We usually expect too much and end up with egg on our faces. This time nobody seemed to expect much at all. It was assumed we'd be just as disappointing as ever. But oddly it just hasn't happened. People are watching games and not having to peep through their fingers or hide behind the sofa. We won a penalty shootout for the first time ever and about half an hour, the team easily beat Sweden two-nil. So now I have to find somebody to take me in and let me watch on Wednesday as I don't have a TV at the flat where I stay when I'm working. I had an appointment for curry and a chat with good friend on Wednesday and have just emailed her to ask if we can eat at a pub with a television. Tonight we find out who England will be playing - Russia or Croatia. If it's Russia, it'll get brutal - our governments are at daggers drawn over them poisoning spies in my home town. Come on Croatia!

I've not watched at all this year so your discussion is the first time I've heard the score

I'm glad you weren't recording it and trying NOT to know the result or I'd have spoiled it for you.

@Mike197602 I briefly had a TV license at my flat for the 2012 Olympics but gave it up again at the next renewal.

Hmm, it takes a good tremor to shake same people onto myLot - my money's on France, though. Too much octopus, no doubt.

How are you these days, good sir? France, hmm. They were pretty terrible in the group stage. Just listening to the TV news where a copper in Peterborough is predicting 'domestic violence' as a result of all the sunburnt fat Englishmen having too much Stella in the sunshine.

@boiboing Apart from the ever decreasing circles of sites that can act as outlets for my utterances, pretty good generally. And as you can probably tell, still not an avid football fan - national pride seems to be more of an obstacle to a stress-free life than it is an encouragement these last couple of years. Hope all is in order with you too. PS. Croatia 2 England 1 on 11-July?

Has the Southern European custom of driving round and round through city centres for some hours blowing horns and waving flags sitting in open car windows arrived in England? It's become a German custom now, too.

You are going to play against Croatia. I am wondering if the final will be England vs France, I would like to see that.
