So the other day they said 50 percent of snake bite deaths occur in India.
True. But what is the ratio of snakebites divided by population? If that is lower than elsewhere in the world, it means India is pretty safe from snakebites. Right?
Or if you have to speak of facilities across the world. We have so low number of hospitals vis a vis other countries, so it is natural that by the time the person is rushed to the hospital he or she is beyond repairs. Or may be the hospital does not have the required anti venom!
But it could also be because people do not know how to manage those snake bites. Tying a tourniquet is not something everybody would know, right?
So are snakes in my country the most vicious and poisonous ones, or is the population of snakes in my country larger than elsewhere, or are there other reasons for those snake bite deaths...
Statistics don't say. They just tell you that most snake bites related deaths occur in India.
There should be final statistics with weighted average points for correct impressions.
I am scared of snakes no doubt. But not as scared of them as of gators.

I think more than likely is because most snake bites occur in rural areas with no access to medical facilities. Hence the high ratio of deaths in India. Still it is pretty appalling that emergency anti venom is not available to those peoplein small villages. A network should be set up to provide anti venom. 46,000 people a year compared to 100,000 for the whole world. Pretty much near half the annual deaths occur in India. Quite clearly the government do not care! 46K is like a small town wiped out every year! Astonishing!

@garymarsh6 Correct Gary, because India has not more venomous snakes than Australia, so they have a problem there.

Like other members said here, in India snake attack people in rural areas so the delay on getting treatment may be one of the reason. Then ignorance of giving first aid is another reason. Last month, in Kerala, a snake swallowed a lady who gone to a forest area for works. She was missing and on search people found the snake, they killed the snake and taken her body from the womb of snake. This kind of incidents spread fear among people. Imagining her situation is really horrible.

@Jessabuma Aw...so sorry...I know it is scary...even I am scared. But chances of surviving snake bite are more than chances of being in the clutches of a gator or crocodile.
