The stupid power grid can't handle the local use of residential air conditioners on this hot afternoon in Big D. I can't stand this. I was disconnected from the internet 2 X in the past 30 minutes and also disconnected on my telephone conversation. I don't know I can take another total power outage. If the electric company wants to keep it's customers happy, they need to get with it. Everytime the power goes out, we have to wait for a few minutes for everything to be back online. I am glad my computer is still working after these two BLIPS. (Bum Luck Insanity Power Surges)

Just think of the power outages when all cars are electric and plugged in.

Yes, unless everyone gets solar chargers.

@lookatdesktop Which do not do any good in rain and cloud cover.

@JohnRoberts I forgot about that. Well, I guess that battery backups for cars will be needed. They would be heavy and large and costly though I bet.

There may be the heavy load in your area on single grid

There is. The population has doubled or maybe tripled in the last 10 or so years. The old grid just can't handle the numbers.

@banksim So you have had this issue with power outages in your area? If so, hopefully they will work things out and everybody will be able to stay cool this summer.

We got so sick of it when we lived in Illinois, we invested in a gas line generator. Worked perfectly and with the next move, we are thinking of doing it again!

Now that's a good idea.

My internet goes off every day. The power goes off every day. There is hardly anyone here. They are all up north, I can't imagine how bad it would be in the summer with a full amount of people here.

@lookatdesktop It does not work here. The internet lines are somehow connected to the electric lines and when the electric is off, the internet is too. This is probably the only place in the nation set up like that.

@akalinus , I am glad I have several analog Citizens Band Radios. I need to get myself a multi channel Trunking Scanner. I had one but gave it to my friend. I used it to keep track of emergency dispatches. I knew a guy who co-owned a burglar alarm company with his dad. My dad also was a CB hound. He really liked it. It is good we still have this older technology at our disposal.

I'm sorry to hear that. Must be very distracting. Do you guys have some kind of battery backup system in your area?

The electricity went off today in my neighbourhood for three hours. We were left with no internet and no TV the whole afternoon.

Where we live it is more likely to be the wind that takes us out. Will surge protectors help at all? I knew someone who lost all their electronics due to a lightning strike.

When I get a Battery Backup system I will make sure it has surge protection too.

Sorry about your BLIPS. That was a good one, by the way. I hope you are up and running soon.

I was only lucky because no power surge occurred after the power up. That can destroy RAM and motherboard in a PC and cost hundreds or thousands to replace things. IF it was just a simple light going out that would not bother me the least bit.

Since we left the GDR (German Democratic Republic) in 1955, I haven't experienced a power outage. But then air conditioners aren't widespread in Germany. We have them mainly in shops and banks. I don't know a private household with AC.

In Dallas, the power grid is just terrible. It was not designed for the extreme influx of population growth. They can't build power plants fast enough.

It can cause damage to some of your appliances specially to your television.
