Finally! Finally, I get to work one of my all-time favorite bands into Play it Again, Sam! We are at #6b, the "cover" portion of today's edition: Type O Negative's cover of Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl." Brooklyn, New York's Type O Negative is indeed, one of my all-time favorite bands, and their existence was cut tragically short by the 2010 death of vocalist/bassist Peter Steele (heart failure.) Due to their overall dark sound, and Steele's gloomy, often morbidly humorous lyrics, the band is often misclassified as a goth act, or as goth metal. They were in fact, a heavy metal band, first and foremost, that happened to have a wicked goth sensibility. And they did a good amount of covers (check out their sludgy, gloom-ridden cover of "Summer Breeze" sometime) during their time together, including "Cinnamon Girl." "Cinnamon Girl" was included on the band's 1996 album, October Rust. Basically, October Rust was the goth album that Peter Steele had been reportedly threatening to make. That thing is DARK. But their version of Neil Young's classic is definitely not a goth tune. No, this one leans purely on Type O's metal side. And it rocks! Released as a single, it charted absolutely nowhere. Whatever. All I know is that when I saw them in concert in Denver that year, they absolutely rocked the hell out of it that night. And I'm a better person for it. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I saw them play this song in 1995 when they opened for Queensryche. In fact, if I recall, they opened their set with it. I was really glad to see it on the next album.

I enjoyed that they made it their own -- however still prefer Neil Young's version
