Driving without my license, walking with no I. D.

After losing my wallet on the trip to Portland, I was faced with having Anne drive us home on the interstate or driving without my license in my possession. Anne rarely drives my not so big Toyota RAV4 and it handles differently than her sedan. So I drove without incident. Then this morning, I was going to take my daughter's dog for an early walk. When I go out walking alone, I always take my wallet and my phone. If there was an incident or an accident, there would be identification in my pocket and Anne could be notified. I went anyway, of course, but it felt odd with nothing on me saying who I am. As far as the driver's license goes, I can get a new one made for $26.50 and since I am on file, the only I D I need to take is some business mail showing my address. I need to do that today.

You could have written down your info on a piece of paper and tucked it in a pocket.

Now, why didn't I think of that?

In the UK we have no legal obligation to carry ID or to have a driving license in the car.

Indeed? How are people identified if they have an accident?

Good question, @Maluse and @boingbong also, how does a traffic policeman check I D on a traffic stop?

@JamesHxstatic and @MALUSE It's a civil liberties issue. The British haven't carried ID cards since World War II and see them very negatively. So any attempt to introduce ID cards always gets rejected. If you have an accident, there is usually something on you that can identify who you are - your phone, your credit cards, an envelope in your bag etc. If that fails, we're on to dental records (nasty). If you are stopped by the police in your car, they take your vehicle registration, your 'verbal details' and you have 48 hours (approx - I'm not sure of the exact amount) to take your ID to the police station if you don't have anything with you. If you've done something so bad that they don't trust you to do that, they can caution you and arrest you.

You could not drive here until they send you a new driver license (the stolen/lost one is canceled). Most people do, if the police stops you, you get a fine and you must bring to their office your driver license within 7 days.

@JamesHxstatic The worst for us would be to lose our documents in Italy, because they would not let us cross the border without documents.

I drove home from Portland and drove to the office to get my duplicate. I am glad there was no incident.

I have many things to renew now. I started by getting a copy of birth certificate. Then I got a Visa debit card for those necessary purchases. Now I need to get my SS card renewed and finally apply for a Florida ID once I am set then I can begin thinking about doing some work.

Good luck with all that! The people at the SS office here are really good and cooperative.

Have your wife's phone number under ICE for emergency. If you are out with your phone but no ID, that's how they will find out who to contact. Your phone can be named too. Mine has my name and number in the settings. Sorry you lost your wallet. Wish someone would return it to you.

Is it illegal to drive without your licence on your person? I don't think it is in England - my licence usually stays in a drawer at home.

Someone mentioned that and I was quite surprised. Here you can be ticketed for no license or proof of insurance.

I can understand your feeling. I feel really vulnerable nowadays if I don't put my seatbelt on whereas once it never worried me. I know it's not really connected to your experience but when things aren't 'normal' it does feel a bit strange.

Thanks for reminding me of all the paperwork I need to replace since the fire! What a pain in the rear end!!!!! I'm trying to list all the personal possessions and the business stuff that was lost. I've gotten about a eighth of the way through and need to get off my thumbs and get to work on it again. Between trying to remember and trying to replace some of this stuff I'm pretty stressed out. I need to finish the list of what the company that started the fire needs to cover financially. I know I'll need to get an attorney and go that direction, but I keep hoping that they will pay without any kind of battle about the loss. (thanks for reminding me that I need to list the freezer) Fortunately I had my license and social security card with me. It is one of those things that we don't think of all the important things we have to replace until we lose them. Especially with something like a driver's license! With my kind of luck I would go about 10 city blocks and get stopped, then every 10 blocks after that. It would be like some sort of sign on the side of my car stating that I don't have a driver's license!

I'm horrified for you. You're living my nightmare. If I had lost my wallet, there would be a credit card plus more than one debit card, all out where sharks could get them plus that driver's license. I wish you well as you go through this.

I had two credit cards and two debit cards, insurance card, Medicare card, Triple AAA plus card, a bunch of stuff. I got my DL this morning and then managed to trip and fall on my way to a haircut, so I came home and wrote about that.
