A menu for a Flinders Range goat

There are some very clever notices in the Flinders Ranges area of South Australia which are aimed at educating people about the environment there. Feral goats are a major problem and we saw quite a few just in our few days there. As the notice says, conditions are ideal for the goats and certainly the ones we saw looked very contented. Although the kids are very cute, goats compete with native animals for water and feed. The endangered yellow-footed rock-wallabies have been impacted severely since the introduction of goats into their areas. The Kapra’s Kitchen menu on the left of the poster is cleverly done. For instance the Mains are listed as: • Aged Acacia in a tannin wrap • Eremophila with shavings of Native Pine • Tender growing tips of Bullock Bush • Glazed chewy Hopbush • Sweet Bursaria with Nut Grass • Saltbush on a bed of Mulga Flowers There were several posters of this type and I thought they were a great way of educating the public.

@JudyEv I agree, it is a fun way to learn what they eat.

Yes, that's just part of a goat's diet. It was an interesting sign and taught you stuff in a fun way.

I can imagine you'd have a lot of goats there. I guess they are wild too or do they mostly belong to someone?

Yes, that's what they're eating. It's pretty clever. I had to read it twice too.

@judyev Perhaps the goats themselves could be put on the menu to ease the problems they cause.

We had goat cheese soon after reading this but no goats were killed in the process - at least I don't think they were.

I did not realize there was also a feral goat problem.

The notice says 100,000 were disposed of in the area in 15 years. Camels and donkeys are a problem too but are much further north. Goats are very hardy and this country really suits them.
