UCLA is Giving Away Free Sunscreen

Skin cancer is a major concern for people who live in Southern California. As a result, UCLA and an organization called IMPACT Melanoma are giving away FREE sunscreen at kiosks along the beach walks in Los Angeles County. The photo above shows what the kiosks look like. They work like those hand sanitizing stations in hospitals. You just put your hand under the nozzle and you get a handful of sunscreen to rub around your body. The type of sunscreen which is dispensed is supposed to be good for the skin and easy on the environment, too. They have 50 of these kiosks set up from Santa Monica Beach to Malibu beach. I think its a great idea. Other communities should provide the same service, which is great for people who forget to bring their sunscreen when they go to the beach.

@RubyHawk - I think all of us forget our sunscreen once in a while. I wish they would put one of the kiosks in Laguna Beach. I think it would be wonderful!

@RubyHawk - Yes, they are trying to prevent melanoma. Since that is a common health problem in places like Southern California, I think this is a great idea.

@rakski - You make a good point. I hope this also educates people on the dangers of sun exposure without sunscreen.

Communities should do a lot of things, but they do not. That being said I think they should be dropping sunscreen from airplanes for how hot it is and how hot its going to be. I wonder if August will have day below 100 degrees here. Still neat that UCLA took the time and at least thinking about people. It was always my favorite college even though they went the way of every other college. I guess they have to in order to survive.

@crossbones27 - I was pretty amazed that UCLA decided to do this. I'm sure it is expensive, but it will save lives. How are you doing in Redlands? Are the fires near you? How is the air quality?

@DeborahDiane There was one in canyon. Think it was at base of mountain Mentone or Yucapia. I am not sure, just saw nasty skies for a day. Said to be started by an arsonist which made the right wing jump. See, no climate change, stupid people. Its sickening and must of had a premonition because usually pay attention more closely to things, but getting upset at how people keep lying about everything.

@crossbones27 - It drives me crazy that there are so many people who do not study science, do not believe in it and do not want to. Not only are there a lot of people who do not believe in climate change, there are people who still believe the earth is flat. It is appalling. I'm glad the fires have not affected you too much.

This is a very good idea. I usually wear sunscreen before going out, so I can wash my hands, should I touch food.

@LadyDuck - Oh, I rarely wear dresses. I usually wear slacks or jeans, with a sweater or long-sleeve shirt, depending on the time of year.

@LadyDuck - My face moisturizer contains sunscreen, and I rub it on my neck and hands. Since I generally wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, my skin is usually covered. However, this is not true for many people, especially tourists, who think they should dress skimpily in Southern California. They can use all the sunscreen they can get!

@DeborahDiane It is and do you know what number is on the sunscreen? Like 15 or 30. Is this a one time thing?

@Hannihar - The sunscreen is SPF 30. I don't know if they plan to do this every summer, or not. So far, they just have it along one stretch of beach ... the beaches which are most popular with kids going to UCLA. Since UCLA is funding the project, perhaps they are hoping to help their students when they go to the beach.

@BelleStarr - It is a beautiful beach. It is not the closest beach to us, so we rarely have been there, but it is the beach most often seen on TV and movies, with people roller blading or bicycling on the concrete boardwalk. The Santa Monica pier, with it's Ferris Wheel, is often seen on TV. It had a prominent role in the first Sharknado movie! LOL

This is an excellent idea. Australia has a very high incidence of skin cancer too. We have a lot of sun-worshippers here but some of them pay highly in the long run.

@JudyEv - I hope this idea spreads around the world. It could save insurance companies a lot of money in the future if they did not have to treat so many cases of skin cancer.

@JudyEv - Yes, that is true. I guess that is why a college is doing this free giveaway, not a pharmaceutical company.

@JohnRoberts - Many Southern California people are not beach people. I once asked a classroom of high school students in Irvine whether or not they liked to go to the beach. Several said they did not. What really surprised me was that several also said they had never been to the beach because their parents did not like it. Irvine is less than 10 miles to the nearest beach!

@dgobucks226 - The sunscreen they use is all natural, with zinc and titanium. It contains no harmful chemicals which could injure the ocean. It has an SPF of 30. I wonder how costly it is, too. They did not say in any of the articles I saw. I think it could save a lot of lives.
