Today is Tax Day

July is the month when our house taxes and our personal property taxes come due. We actually have until August 1 to pay them but I plan to go to the town hall today to make my payment. I could pay the bill online on the town website but there is a fee even for paying with a check. I could have used bill pay from my checking account but I didn't want to do that until the money had been deposited into my account and that was yesterday. The check would not get to them on time. I write very few checks these days, pretty much one a week for church is about it but I am going to write one to the town and drop it off today, one less thing hanging over my head!! Some people have the money for their house taxes automatically taken out with their mortgage payment but since we don't have a mortgage that is not possible. Is it tax day in your neck of the woods?

We don't have to do a tax form any more as we're on a pension. It was always a pain.

We have to pay real estate tax even though we are retired. It is charged by our state, it is not a form we fill out, they assess the value of pour property and bill us.

@BelleStarr We pay rates but that's probably a bit different although it is based on the value of our property. Our rates also cover rubbish removal and water if applicable.

We have to submit all the tax forms by the 30th of April and pay all the amount by May 31st, or decide to pay in 3 installments, the last is due by the 30th of September.

We don't have forms that we fill out for this, our home is evaluated by the town and then they tell us how much we need to pay every year.

@BelleStarr Our home is evaluated by the town, but we are asked to fill a form (very simple) every year, after the deduction for annual expenses to keep the house. They calculate the taxes we pay.

Yes it's the same here for me. House taxes and property taxes are due but I pay mine in installments over the next few months.

We don't get the installment option in Connecticut but I do in Pennsylvania and Florida with a discount if we pay early.

Yes it is, we finished the mortgage on the cottage last year so now all the homes are mortgage free.

Our property taxes are due every time we turn around it seems! They are due on the last business day of February and March-that is the interim bill. Then they are due again the end of June, August and October. Its smaller amounts, but for those just starting out, they have to have a really sharp pencil and no unplanned emergencies as they won't have time to recover from the dip in their savings. I remember that happened to our son once and we helped him get over the hump.

we paid our real estate taxes last March. as much as possible, we do not want to be late in paying because there may be some penalties added.

As I remember October was tax paying time. We live in an apartment now so I don't have that to worry about. Another good thing about living in an apartment. That and yard work.

@BelleStarr I can understand that. I didn't know if I would like an apartment. I'd never lived in one before. I'd always had property, flowers and vegetable garden. And it surprised me how much I like it.

Our real property taxes become due every quarter but I pay mine in January for the whole year. By doing so, I get a 15% discount. I do the same for my cable TV subscription -pay in advance for the whole year - and I get 20% off.

Getting that big of a discount is a good reason to pay in advance

We don't pay taxes in Mississippi, because I am legally blind and we are exempt. In West Virginia they are paid at the start of the new year.

Wow, I am not sure there are any exemptions in Connecticut for property taxes, seniors get a tiny exemption if they have very little income. I just looked it up and there is a $3000 discount for people who are legally blind, who knew?

@Bellestarr I have till 31 October to do mine and as usual I'll probably be panicking at the last minuite to get it in even though I have had since April 5 so to do. I have no objection to paying taxes (I think I get quite a lot in return for what I pay) but I hate the nuisance of having to do it - and get it right.

@xFiacre We don't even get our bill until July 1st so we only have the month for the first half, the second half is due in January. I will be in Florida so that one I will do bill pay with.

Town hall is so close to us, so my husband paid on July 30th. I wrote the checks rather than pay for online use. We don't have any mortgages either.

I usually visit the two hall twice a year, once for the taxes and once for the dog licenses. Our is a pretty old school that was converted.
