Diary 4th And 5th August 2018

Diary Saturday 4th August 2018 I went to buy a monthly Bus ticket today at approximately 2.30pm. First of all I found that for the 6th time in seven months the ticket seller at the main Preston Bus Station had no functioning card reader, and that I was once again obliged to go to a bank machine, get cash and go back to collect my bus ticket. This is deplorable, especially the frequency with which it occurs. Aside from adding time to my day it means I have to withdraw more cash than I intend to actually spend as cash points do not pay out exactly £44.00 but oblige the customer to withdraw £50 (and in a few cases £60.00. The seller treated my unhappiness at this repeated inconvenience at my expense with smug disdain and actually threw my change at me when I handed over my cash because i'd dared to complain about it. Not only is failing to have a functioning cash machine in the ticket office disgusting when zero effort is being made to put the problem right, obliging customers to select and carry excess cash puts people at risk of being mugged and it is not good for customers who are elderly, disabled, alone or weighed down with shopping. For the vender to treat the customer discomfort as a joke is repulsive. I fired off an angry letter demanding that the Preston Bus company makes improvements to its card payment services and more importantly, staff attitudes. Later I decided to save myself some cooking by going to the local chippy only to find it and several others close early on a Saturday night. When I lived in Manchester Saturdays were regarded as the best night to stay open evenings and all night. I eventually found a take-away that has such a common sense attitude. Crazy version of "The Wheels on the Bus" sung by Mad'Donna. Sounds very like "Ray of Light" by Madonna!!!

The seller has no control over the malfunction of the machine, but he does have control of his manners and attitude. Both of them are appalling. Let's hope your letter hope your letter has some effect.

I hate to carry cash on me and usually use my credit card. And I hate more when the cashier tells you have to pay with cash.

@arthurchappell I agree. I don't expect to pay my small expenses like a cup of tea or a small bottle of water with card, I carry some change for that every day. But buying a monthly ticket is definitely not among those daily expenses.

@zhorak I don't mind so much when it is a place that only ever takes cash or if the amounts are small, but places promising they take card payments that frequently fail to offer the service are beyond the pail

@zhorak I do see people paying by card for literally every minor item bought which is annoying and holds up the queue needlessly

I wonder if they ever asked to have the card reader repaired, it is not possible that it break down all the time.

@LadyDuck they should have a back up system or allow their special tickets to be sold through other outlets. Having to go to the bus station for them is annoying

@arthurchappell I fully agree with you, only one place where to buy is not enough.

I find the phrases 'training issue' and 'damaging your brand' to be effective in such letters of complaint.

Unfortunately things being down is just a way of life. The ATM at Walgreens which is the closest one to work has been down for months..

@arthurchappell same with the things that are broken at the bus station. They may not of.reported it. Or it could of gotten fixed and broke again or.it could be like our drinking fountain at work. They unhooked it three months ago said they would bring the replacements the next day and haven't shown up yet..

Oh dear what a sod he or she was at the ticket vending place. So happy you wrote a letter of complaint and I hope it will do some good Arthur. It is deplorable the way they act today. A sad reflection of the times. No more cheery service on the transport system. And no chippies open? My gosh that is nearly unbelievable. Sorry all this is happening there Arthur. Terrible.

I am also staying in my cool room and catching up online. One thing that is good about living in a resort town like Daytona Beach, Florida is that there are places for food open 24 hours and at most convenience stores and pizza places there are ATMs in case you run short.

I am glad that you sent them a letter. If no one complains - they will think all is well when it is not. I am never happy when I am told I must draw out 20, 30, or 40. It is my money so why can't I have the exact amount I need? Why wouldn't they allow $16, $24 or $34.

@Kandae11 a working card reader would have taken the exact amount required, even if it was £44.11 - instead I had to find a cash machine that doesn't charge for withdrawals, take out £50.00 and carry the remaining £6.00 that I'd have preferred to leave in my account
