Diary Saturday 4th August 2018 I went to buy a monthly Bus ticket today at approximately 2.30pm. First of all I found that for the 6th time in seven months the ticket seller at the main Preston Bus Station had no functioning card reader, and that I was once again obliged to go to a bank machine, get cash and go back to collect my bus ticket. This is deplorable, especially the frequency with which it occurs. Aside from adding time to my day it means I have to withdraw more cash than I intend to actually spend as cash points do not pay out exactly £44.00 but oblige the customer to withdraw £50 (and in a few cases £60.00. The seller treated my unhappiness at this repeated inconvenience at my expense with smug disdain and actually threw my change at me when I handed over my cash because i'd dared to complain about it. Not only is failing to have a functioning cash machine in the ticket office disgusting when zero effort is being made to put the problem right, obliging customers to select and carry excess cash puts people at risk of being mugged and it is not good for customers who are elderly, disabled, alone or weighed down with shopping. For the vender to treat the customer discomfort as a joke is repulsive. I fired off an angry letter demanding that the Preston Bus company makes improvements to its card payment services and more importantly, staff attitudes. Later I decided to save myself some cooking by going to the local chippy only to find it and several others close early on a Saturday night. When I lived in Manchester Saturdays were regarded as the best night to stay open evenings and all night. I eventually found a take-away that has such a common sense attitude.
