Easy fruit fly traps

We deal with fruit flies periodically here because we have a parrot who eats fresh food and who throws it out of her bowl down onto the bottom of her cage. If life gets too busy for us to change the cage papers for a couple of days or if there are bananas or avocados sitting on the kitchen counter. . . BAM! We have fruit flies. Then forget it, we wind up dealing with them for a couple of weeks. If you look online, you'll see all of these complicated homemade traps for fruit flies involving jars, vinegar, inverted coffee filters, etc. You don't have to bother with all of that. I just take my pint mason jars, put an inch or so of cheapo white wine in them and then leave them in prime fruit fly locations (kitchen counter, on top of the parrot cage). That's it. Those flies just jump right in there and what a happy death they must have. I just dumped out the mason jar I had going in the kitchen and refreshed it with new wine. (Trader Joe's $3 a bottle stuff) There are already 2 dozen drowned fruit flies in 10 minutes. It doesn't get any easier than that!

Thank you for the information. With my cat Sid and his food bowl and all I do get some of those pesky flies.

I used apple cider vinegar which worked as the rabbits have a tendency to hit fruits/ veggies around

Great idea. No fruit flies now but I will need to try it when they come in a few weeks.
