I had the opportunity recently to test the old adage, "If you've time to spare, go by air!". Along with that came the mandatory security check, where your luggage is x-rayed and you are asked to practically disrobe in front of a room full of strangers. This time, I was wearing a Star Wars tee-shirt like the one pictured here, and I heard the guy say" Ever tried to build one? "... By the time I was re-donning my shoes, we had determined that the new led strip lights are the bee's knees for building your own working light sabre. Easiest trip through security ever! Amazing what discussions are had when travelling...

I've never been through air port security. Although a friend had a harrowing experience he brought onto himself in Peru! (Let me suggest that you never try to smuggle a baby monkey out of a country through the security people. Even though they found the baby monkey, my friend was forced to strip completely to show he had nothing else 'hidden' and was put in jail for 90 days before allowed to return to the U.S. I laughed my tail end off over this. He didn't seem to think it was nearly as funny as I did. Apparently, he made some very 'good' friends in jail, too. I didn't ask him about that part of his stay!) I've heard those light strips can have a lot of technical problems with them, although the one Pretty 'won' on Amazon.com has been working well since she received it and gave it to me almost a year ago. (Have you ever tried 'winning' anything on Amazon's give-away site?

@pgntwo Hmmm... did you make yourself a quick mental note to be more choosy about how you dress before attempting to board a flight, pgn? (Had I known you were going to have this type of experience before you left, I might have bribed a few security people to 'spice' the experience up for you, just a bit... ) I hope you have fun perusing the offerings there!

My Peruvian experience was a connecting flight in Amsterdam, where I was wearing a tee-shirt showing Peruvian Gold, some drink or other. The guys thought I had just disembarked from the flight just arrived from Lima... I convinced them otherwise pretty quickly. I shall peruse the Amazon link presently, good link, btw - Amazon and Peru.

@pgntwo amazing too how trying to take one of those babies on board could result in a complimentary prostate exam.

@pgntwo now that I’ve time to reflect on my proposal of flying in the nip for security reasons I have noticed several difficulties. 1. I’m not having Tony from cabin crew looking to make sure my seat belt is buckled. 2. Something might get caught in the seat belt buckle. 3. I’d get an eyeful of unsightliness each time the man at the window squeezed out past me to get to the toilet. 4. I don’t want to be sitting unclad on a slippery plastic seat that has recently be sat upon by another unclad behind. The list goes on. I’ll just put up with getting my bum felt when I set off the bells in the airport. It has worked thus far.

Soon you'll have to bring your own rubber gloves. Or endoscope...

@xFiacre Alas, that approach would only bring more sabres into view, I think... The in-flight cushions (pillows?) would be present in abundance, though - low-fare airlines too!

@pgntwo I have seen YouTube videos of the Security Checks in the United States, I wonder how it is that there are no more people who sue them. I have seen a lady on a wheelchair left in the waiting are with only her bra and knickers, while other people passed in front of her. A shame!

Yes, I read of an Indian lady's experience with Immigration Services at Heathrow recently - shocking turn of events!

@LadyDuck I remember seeing absolute hate for the TSA online after it was invented. Seemed every US person that flew hated them

My 15-year old son, a technical genius, built himself a light saber from scratch. I have no idea how he powers it, but it is quite the marvel. I was quite impressed when he showed it to me, and I loved how it felt holding it...it actually had some weight to it, unlike the cheap plastic things you can buy in stores. And on a different subject, your use of the word 'rapport' in the title made me laugh! We were conducting interviews this week at work, and one of the interview questions asked the candidates how they would build rapport with co-workers on their first week of the job. Nobody knew what the word rapport meant! Every single candidate had to ask for clarification. I guess our society is getting stupider and stupider with each passing year!

The more we have information at our fingertips, the less we retain any useful fact, it seems... Any chance of a pic of this home-constructed light-sabre?

@moffittjc Perhaps it serves a defensive role in your ex-wife's house?

@pgntwo I'll see what I can do about a photo. My son keeps the light sabre at his moms house (we're divorced).

Travel by air has become a bit of a cattle drive over here - and the cowherds in Security can make or break your journey

@pgntwo Oh it's getting that way more and more-- I'd rather take a train or a travel bus but sometimes you can't

They gave up feeding people on short-haul flights here years ago - keeps the self-loading freight (passengers) meaner...
