Do you find it challenging to convert time?

I'm in Nairobi which is +3 GMT. I have been watching DSTV and in every foreign channel when they are advertising new programs, they have so many time zones that I have no idea what time it is. There is CAT , PST, MST, EST and many others. It will take a century to figure out all this. All I know is GMT and I know each member has their own depending on where they are located.

It is difficult to decipher the time zones. The thing to remember is that GMT is on the 0° line of longitude that separates the Eastern and Western hemispheres. The opposite of that line is the International Date Line at 180° longitude. From 0° longitude (GMT) Westward to the 180th° parallel, you subtract an hour for each time zone. From GMT Eastward to the 180th parallel you add an hour for each time zone. (There are some time zones that are divided into two 30 minute increments like Greenland and Newfoundland. Don't ask me why. ) So if you are +3 GMT then you are 3 hours ahead of GMT. You are +7 from my time in AST, and +11 from PST. This means you are ahead of me by 7 hours and ahead of California by 11 hours... This is how I understand it.

This is the easiest way to understand time zones. Thanks for your comment as it is quite helpful

@aureliah The time zone that ends the day is AOE (Anywhere on Earth) and is located at the International Date Line. -12 hours from GMT. I think its pretty interesting. When the day (Sunday, August 12, 2018) Ends at midnight on the Date Line, it is already Noon on Monday, August 13, 2018 GMT.

I don't even think about it! What difference does it make? Whether it is Sunday or Monday or 11 AM or 11 PM communication takes place when you are available!

True it does not really matter but just like any other thought it crossed my mind.

It is not something that I have thought about a lot--until I had a friend move from the US to China. Thankfully I found a website that tells me the time where he is.

Okay but when you have someone in another time zone at least you have no idea about the time difference

GMT means Greenwich Mean Time. GMT ZERO is Greenwich (UK), we are in +1 GMT, but right now we have to add 1 hours because of the Daylight Saving Time. It is complicated.

@aureliah I agree and not all the countries use the GMT system, this makes things even more complicated.

GMT is the easiest way for me to find out what time it is in a certain area but these are complicated things to even think about

I don't worry about the times. I've been here long enough to have a vague idea about what time it is for some members but otherwise I don't worry about it.

@aureliah We have a son who lives in Ireland so we do know roughly what time it is there. We have to know so we don't ring him at 3am!!

@JudyEv That is the thing. You do not want to call people while they are deep asleep

Then that is great. I can only figure out the time in some areas without Googling though it is never a real bother

what i learned when i flew to Kuwait in 1986 was, i flew (via plane of course) at night and i should expect dawn later, but as what my brother said, the night will be going to a deeper night. i then understood that we passed the Greenwich meridian time on the other side of the world.
