Our Korean Samgyupsal Experience

For the first time last Sunday after my duty at the office, hubby and I, went to this Korean Samgyupsal Restaurant in the mall that the office manages and ate their unlimited Samgyupsal meal. Samgyupsal or samgyeopsal is grilled pork belly strips, a Korean dish as you can see in the picture I got from google. Along with the unlimited samgyupsal, we get to eat the buffet consisting of different veggie meals. Kimchi was one of them. We got to grill four times of what that man in the picture is cutting. So you can imagine how much fat, we have eaten. The two teeners on the next table had grilled a lot of times. Well, at least they are still young. Hubby and I ate a lot of it too, along with the kimchi, which we both found so delicious and a perfect pair, since they were spicy. At least, kimchi was a veggie and good thing also we are taking our cholesterol meds. Oh my, I don’t know if the samgyupsal we ate was what caused my legs and ankles to swell that night when we arrived home. Hubby and I promised ourselves after that, that we will never eat samgyupsal anymore. But maybe yes, if it is purely lean meat. Have you ever tasted Korean samgyupsal? Did you like it? Note: Pictures are from google, since hubby don't like taking pictures when in a restaurant.

oh yes, we have a lot here. And that is the favorite of my nephew. But we have beef here as well. When we eat there, I usually do not eat the rice but roll the meat in lettuce.

There, they don't have lettuce but cabbage. I suppose that's what it is for. We didn't know it can be like that so we didn't get the cabbage slices. Had we known, we could have done that. We are the first timers that's why.

No, we have not tried it; but I won't because it looks just like bacon! We prefer "kimbap" one that has so many vegetables in it and it is served sizzling. So you also like kimchi? Good thing you had it to sweep away the fats!

It looks a lot similar to bacon. We do not eat pork and this seems a bit too fat.

Yes, we first thought it's bacon. I guess, this is the meat they use for bacon. They just cure it.

It is thinly sliced pork belly, It is not cured, so it won't taste like bacon.

Yes, you should try it too. It's so delicious. As you can see from the others' comment, it could be wrapped in lettuce then eat it. They don't have lettuce but cabbage leaves. I prefer to have the lettuce.

How lovely what a nice meal you had. Yes when I eat Chinese food I get swelling, I do not know why this is. Maybe the high salt?

Thank you. Yes, I guess it's because of the salt and of course the fats in the meat.

@Courage7 I went to a rheumatologist and she said it is but natural that my feet swell, because I am the whole day sitting in front of my computer. So, at the end of the day it is already swollen. She told me to raise it in a piled up pillows which I do at night. In the morning , the swelling has worn off.

I enjoy samgyeupsal at home so I can get to eat sirloin instead of pork belly. I also make my own kimchi. I'm too lazy to drive an hour to get to the nearest Korean restaurant + the price is skyrocket high.

Wow, really. I think it is easy if you have that cooking ware for samgyupsal. Indeed, at least you can choose sirloin which is leaner. At least, at anytime you can eat it at a lower expense.

Korean BBQ is a very popular choice amongst Mainland China Chinese besides the Spicy Chongqing Hotpot (MaLaTang). For those who cannot afford this expensive dine out choice, we will go to the local BBQ which is less fanciful but equally good.

@SIMPLYD You can find this in provinces like Sichuan, Guizhou and Hubei which has a much spicy preference in their diets. I am sure you will make a trip to Chengdu where you can see the panda sanctuaries and you can experience the Sichuan Hot Pot.

No, we didn't do that. Though, there are cabbage leaves at the buffet, but we didn't get it. We are first timers in going to a Korean restaurant, so we don't know it can be used as wrap. But if it is lettuce, I will get and wrap the samgyupsal and eat it. I love lettuce.

That sounds such a lovely meal. Pork belly was once considered a very inferior meat. I guess it depends on how it is cooked and the seasonings that are put with it.

Yes, thank you. Indeed, pork belly is an inferior meat. But it is so delicious, as with this samgyupsal. Here, they also make the whole belly into pork belly lechon or roasted pork belly. So crispy and delicious but very fatty. Yaiks.

@SIMPLYD When I was a child lamb shanks were used for soup or fed to the dogs. Now they cost a small fortune in restaurants. Like pork belly, they have come into favour.

Oh Samgyupsal it's yummy. Here in Korea, there are a lot of Samgyupsal restaurants. They are mostly jampacked during weekends. You what, the Samgyupsal here in Korea is tastier than we have there in the Philippines. I guess it's because of the meat.
