Ghost Riders of the Chisolm Trail

This is a silhouette tableau near Caldwell, Kansas. It is off in the distance from a roadside pullout. The figures are actually mounted where the Chisholm trail went through. The community raised the funds and people donated land and right of way to establish this historical scene. Some people say that it is so lifelike that they can see dust from the outriders and hear the noise of their passing. The Chisholm Trail was a trail used to move cattle west during the height of the cattle industry in the old west. It followed trails originally established by Native American tribes. Cattle were a major source of food in the American West in the late 1800's and beyond. This is just something we saw as we traveled to pick up the windshield for hubby;s car today.

The best trails were those established by Native American tribes. I love those silhouette characters.

The silhouette art has gotten very popular in the last few years. We have seen some up close and personal as well. Yes, native Americans, wildlife, and cattle on their own find the best and easiest trails.

@LadyDuck In the old days it was important for survival to find places to build that got the right breezes, caught the sun just right and had available water and good land. Now people just build willy nilly.

@GardenGerty The best places to live here, is where the first inhabitants built their first villages. It seems that our ancestors knew better how to chose the right places.

That's a bit like the stagecoach one we saw in South Australia but this is much bigger and better. Thanks for sharing it.

Our area is still open enough that we can imagine how things had been in the past. I like these kinds of displays.

This is about two and a half hours from our house. Had to go to Oklahoma to a junk yard for a windshield.

@GardenGerty Still that's close, considering I thought the Chisolm Trail was in Texas.

@just4him It starts near Fort Worth, goes past Oklahoma City, continuing North to Wichita Kansas and from there to Abilene, Kansas. Of course not all of it is visible trail any more. From Abilene the Texas longhorns were loaded onto rail cars to go to market. Not sure if that was east or west.

I think it would be cool at dusk or sunrise. A full moon would be cool as well. Otherwise I am not sure they would show up.
