that dinner thing -- Instant Pot bratwurst

One of these days, I promise to write something more interesting than what I'm having for dinner. In the meantime though, I still like talking about food. The other half worked an early morning shift today and brought home some whole grain hot dog buns that were in the donation bin. I hadn't gotten myself organized enough to figure out what to make for dinner tonight, so when I saw the buns I thought that hot dogs and bratwurst would be perfect. Why have both? Because I only have one package of bratwurst in the freezer, and most of the little kids would prefer hot dogs anyway. I'm planning to sear the brats on the saute setting, then put them in the steamer basket to steam on the pressure cooker setting. I've had too many exploded hot dogs in the Instant Pot, so I'm making those in the toaster oven. I'm not really sure what to have on the side... I have salad makings, but wish I had some sauerkraut. I don't even have any potatoes in the house right now. I do think I still have some baked beans in the freezer and some leftover homemade macaroni and cheese, so maybe that will do along with some salad.

I might even pull out paper plates. I'm pretty tired today and do not relish the idea of cleaning up the kitchen again after dinner.

Either way it sounds delicious, although I prefer my brats cooked on the grill. But brats and sauerkraut? A common winter dish for me. Braised. I think all of this here signals the makings of one hell of a good meal.

@porwest Isn't today the best time, when they're clearancing them out in order to make room for the fall inventory?

@spiderdust It is definitely a good time. But they still sell grills during the winter, especially at the home improvement stores, and since most people don't grill during the winter, those stores like to encourage movement of product, and so you can get a grill sometimes even cheaper then than now.

@spiderdust Best time to buy a grill is probably in the middle of winter.

@spiderdust I do the same when I want to "clean up" the refrigerator or the freezer.

I try to be creative. Sometimes I look in the fridge and can't figure out what to make from the leftovers.

More or less. I found that I had 4 cans of canned potatoes in the pantry, and attempted to make mashed potatoes out of them. The result was less than popular. Maybe I'll make fried potato cakes out of what's left.

I don't know why this triggered what I would make tonight. But im thinking breakfast for dinner. I have half a pack of maple sausage links, toast, and eggs. That sounds easy and good. Especially since I cleaned the kitchen today and that won't make too big of a mess.
