Jag-wahr? Jag-yu-ahr? Or Jag-wire? How do YOU say it?

Everyone has pet peeves. Some are related to behavior. Some are related to proper language usage. And some are how words are pronounced by others. I have several, but I'm going to bring up one particular one on word pronunciation. It's bad enough people in South Jersey pronounce WATER as WOODER. I have a friend who says DINT and CUHNT instead of DIDN'T and COULDN'T. Another friend says PIXTURE instead of PICTURE. But, the one bothering me the most at the moment is when people say JAGWIRE. Exactly where in the word JAGUAR do you see IRE? How can you pronounce UAR as IRE? I have no problems with the traditional US pronunciation of JAG-WAHR or the British JAG-YU-AHR. Both are in line with the actual spelling. But, JAG-WIRE??? Do you also pronounce it that way when talking of the big cat version? WHY??!?!?

I say Jag-u-wa, but since I am deep south Alabama and I do say Jersey and not Joysee. And since I prefer to just say Jag, I will not let anyone elses slang bother me.

South Jersey doesn't say Joysee, either. That's NORTH Jersey closer to NYC. But, I honestly didn't realize that Alabama would pronounce Jaguar similar to the British. I learned something new!

I just call it a car or a cat.

some jerseyisms are close to rhode islandisms..but we say "wattah". i'm guilty of using both jag-wahr and jag-wire. it's one of those you just do i guess.

In my mind, I pronounce this word in Russian: "yaguar." If I need to say it aloud, I would say "jagyuahr"

That's very similar. You pronounce the J like we pronounce the Y.

I always follow the British accent while pronouncing a word in English.

Then you have three syllables when you say it. That actually makes sense to me.
