Spent 30 minutes tracking down mozzarella cheese

I went out to the grocery store earlier this afternoon because I needed creme fraiche for tonight's dinner. Then when I went to start getting ready to make it, I realized that I was out of mozzarella cheese. I figured I'd be able to just pop down the road to the local CVS and get a bag of shredded mozz. I'd be out and back in like 5 minutes. Nope. They didn't have any cheese at all. So I went to Quick Check which was 3 minutes from there. Nope. All they had was cream cheese and string cheese. Then I figured I'd try the sketchy Rite Aid down the street. They only had American cheese slices. The lightbulb finally went off and I stopped at the little Mexican grocery that I had passed on my way to Rite Aid. I know that there is a Mexican cheese that they say you can substitute with mozzarella. I thought I'd use THAT as a sub for the mozz. As it turned out, they had a nice big bag of pre-shredded mozzarella. I was so happy to finally find it. It took me half an hour and I could have just saved myself the hassle and gone back to the regular grocery store in that amount of time. Oh well. Live and learn.

I like the abbreviation 'mozz'. Is it generally used or have you made it up?

@NJChicaa Pity that I can't impress anyone with it as I don't live in an English-speaking country. Italians (the inventors of mozzarella) and Germans don't abbreviate the word.

See, when I make lasagna I don't make the meat variety. I make spinach lasagna, and I generally use ricotta in place of cottage cheese, and provolone in place of Mozz.

Glad you found what you needed, though. And it's nice to patronize the non-chain smaller stores.

I agree. I have to go to them whenever I need Mexican crema too.

I forget what the Mexican cheese is called. Queso Oaxaca?

Yes that is it. I usually can't find it in my local grocery store. I'd have to go to a Mexican grocer to find it.

@NJChicaa Have you ever tried queso panela? You can grill it or sear it in a pan.

Yep. I'd have picked a regular grocery store from the word go. But that being said, I mean, it's not like mozz is a specialty cheese after all. Sometimes I go to a furniture store looking for a plumbing fitting and I am HIGHLY disappointed.

I was being lazy and didn't want to make the drive. . . the whole 2 mile drive.

We don't have any good brands of mozz here and I do miss it. Now my daughter brings it back home since she works in NY.
