Why do people order a cup of expresso?

I've been in cafes or restaurants and even at house parties where people say they want a cup or shot of expresso. Don't they know it's espresso they are drinking? Seems like they don't. Maybe they don't realize they are pronouncing it wrong. Or maybe they are pronouncing it as expresso because they think that's the way it is spelled... When I hear someone say it wrong I want to correct them but I always hesitate because I don't want to get them upset. Expresso instead of espresso seems like one of the words/phrases that people mispronounce a lot. Ex Cetera instead of Et Cetera is another commonly mispronounced words. Any others you know of?

People who ask for "a panini" also are getting it wrong...

Ein Fischbrötchen
@lovebuglena Panino is the name for anything served in a bisected roll or bun, like un bocadillo in Spain or ein Fischbrötchen in Germany...

@pgntwo I thought panini as they call it here in the states is anything between two flat pieces of bread that can be pressed and grilled.
