Warm Milk Still Works For Me

Well there I was having another tossing, turning, and getting up and down night. I've been pretty good for quite a while but started having a few unsettled and unsettling nights! Usually, if I have a bad night- the next night is a slam dunk sleep for sure- but not this week! Lots on my mind- as my son is moving out of town for a job position and my granddaughter is just starting school. A few nights I even found the AC wasn't working right and it felt so muggy. Anyway, I found myself going to my old standby-- warming some milk in the microwave at night and sipping it slowly. There apparently is a protein or something in milk that actually does act as a sedative when it is heated up. Another reason it works for me is that I suspect the dairy makes me a bit stuffy so for some reason that also makes me tired. But it does work in making me sleepy and gets me back to sleep. Whatever the reason I was happy to have it for those nights and will probably be using it again pretty soon. How about you- have you ever tried warm milk?

Who's keeping you up Mary? Or rather, what's keeping you up? My mom always prepared warm milk every bed time.

Your mom is a very smart lady---it calms the nerves for sleep--no I'm not a great sleeper.

It stuffs me up to to a degree but I've been having Milo the last few nights. Do you have that there? It seems to be everywhere pretty much. I'm glad it works for you.

I'm lactose intolerant so I can't drink milk (warm or cold), so I don't know if it would work for me. I suspect that almond milk or soy milk probably doesn't have the same effect. On nights where I find difficulty falling asleep, I usually will read a good book, and that usually does the trick. Not always, but most of the time it works.

@MarymargII I'll have to give the magnesium a try. Sundays are my worst insomnia days, just because I allow myself to get out of my normal routine and sleep schedule on the weekends, which wrecks havoc with my body on Sunday nights! I've also heard that lavender works really well to help relax you and help you fall asleep.

Also try some magnesium then- the powdered form in a little warm water- also works wonderfully!

@just4him Well, if you use pretend sugar (ha) the cocoa part is natural and an antioxidant and would probably be on your diet.

Well the chocolate has caffeine so it may just keep you up. Tastes a lot better though!

I have tried it with cornflakes. If it helps you to get sound sleep, don't quit it. Besides, it is a healthy drink.

Just the thought of warm milk turns me off, unless it is chocolate milk.

Should I drink warm milk before going to sleep, I would spend the night on the toilet bowl.

@MarymargII I added a tablespoon of sour cream on top of my smoked salmon last evening. Silly me, sour cream is also a dairy product.

I haven't had warm milk since I was a child, but then my mom always made me brush my teeth afterwards. Warm milk does work. I hope you are sleeping better now.

Yes it does work- apparently there is a protein that activates when the milk is warmed up-- it does make me sleepy anyway, which is a good one.
