Flying Cars, Replicators, Holodecks

MyLot Exclusive #19 For some reason, many of my recent discussions have revolved around the future. Future tech, to be specific. Things like Flying Cars, Replicators and Holodecks. Also anti-gravity machines. Nearly forgot that one. And this has got me thinking and then asking, "What does everyone want in the future?" My answers are pretty obvious. The aforementioned Flying Cars, Replicators, Holodecks and Anti-Grav Machines. Plus a few others. Such as Westworld style robots to...um, let's just say to serve every personal need or want you may have. Everything from washing the car to doing the laundry...Or will our clothes be self-cleaning?...and whatever else you may come up with for them to do. And there must be more. Lots more. I can think of a few but I want to know what everyone else thinks. That's why I'm asking you, my loyal, dedicated 75 million daily readers, "What do you want in the future? What do you think we'll have? Do you see anything coming that frightens you?" I know, I know, that is way too much to ask---So pick and choose what you want to address. Of course, if you want to do all of them and/or even add some of your own, too, that's also fine. Be as long or short as you want. To avoid getting the exact same answers from just about everyone, we'll get VERY science-fictiony and assume that we've solved all or most medical problems so everyone will feel and act young and healthy no matter how old they are and we've got World Peace And Equality For Everyone and solved the Climate and Pollution Problem so you don't have to go over any of them. So, that's it. In this future, what do you want, need, expect? Are you frightened by any of it? I can't wait to see the answers. If there are any. Sometimes these things flop and if that happens, I won't give up. I'll just figure out new ways to present it until it interests people.

I would like to see the future hold lots and lots of natural beauty and health for the Earth. Responsible husbandry and care for our tara firma. Free universities, free healthcare, free food and housing. A future where everyone has a job to do and they do it because they want to contribute to society. I'd like to see space travel and exploration take a leap and all manner of other sciences being explored.

I forgot about poverty. That's one that I want eliminated, too. Free healthcare, housing, education and food are all great things. About jobs...Should everyone have a job? I assume that all the things that have to be done will be done by machines and that leaves things that just contribute to society. The Arts and Sciences (Because even in this perfect world, we can always learn more), basically. I'm kind of on the fence about everyone having to do something but maybe you're right. Maybe it would be better. Space travel and exploration---I'm right with you on that. I wish we were doing more of it now.

@xander6464 Just call it a contribution, whether a job, hobby or mad scientist. Everyone has something to contribute. It'd get mighty boring just sitting on the beach sipping champagne.

@Namelesss Well, it might get boring sitting on the beach, sipping champagne but I'd like to test that theory! I like the way you phrased, "Just call it a contribution, whether a job, hobby or mad scientist." It may be just that simple, call it a contribution instead of a job. I think most people would go for that. And I do think the boredom factor is real, too. I know many retired people who went back to work. They don't need any money, they just want something to do and to feel useful.

With the flying cars they will be falling out of the sky and hitting people and knocking them down.

Perhaps but keep in mind, they said the same thing about the airplane.

I am living my future now--I have everything I need, expect nothing and listen to the babbling of a few--not to name names!

Great topic. I too am waiting for "Westworld" style robots. Self driving cars, and maybe even Hover Cars, that would be neat. But here it is 2018 and not even a Hover board, which I believe I was promised in "Back to the Future". I would like to see big advances in health care, and a return of emotional intelligence. Though the later of which I doubt would ever really happen. Time travel would be great. I am not real excited about smart home tech like Alexa. Seems like a handy way to spy on people

It does seem to be going way too slowly, doesn't it? Movies and shows like BTTF and The Jetsons have made lots of promises and science is taking forever to deliver them. The good news is that self-driving cars and realistic robots are nearly here. Flying cars and hoverboards can't be that far away...Can they? A return to emotional intelligence might be a bridge too far but if we solve all the other problems, maybe that will come along with it. But if not, the bright side is that you will have a hoverboard! And a way to shut off gravity in one room. I can think of lots of fun uses for that. Such as playing astronaut and pretending you're in the Space Station or walking around on the Moon. I'm sure that those things are already spying...And wasn't it bad enough when it was just your phones and computers spying on you? I don't know if you will be able to escape it, though, because soon, it will be built into everything and you won't even be able to buy a refrigerator that doesn't spy on you.

@FayeHazel I don't think you're going to have to wait long. Robots aren't quite perfect yet but they are getting there quickly. You should check some out on YouTube sometime. You might be happily surprised. I want self-driving cars now. Driving lost its' charm for me a long time ago. And, some people, I'm not naming any names because I don't want to embarrass anyone, accuse me of getting lost and not asking for directions. As if. I bet they can come up with a pill for that. And it's about time. If you turn the gravity to zero, you would just float. There's no up or down in Space and it would be the same with 0 gravity here, so you would just float in the middle. I think setting it at 1/6 normal gravity, the same as on the Moon, would be ideal. And I thought of another fun use for it. You could dance with someone, floating above the floor, so you wouldn't have to worry about stepping on your partner's toes. That's not a problem for me, of course, but I understand it affects a lot of people. I want one of those! I'm not very good at doing it the old-fashioned way. I always end up with way too much milk or no milk at all.

@xander6464 Yes. Way, way too slowly. I had something in mind like the "Joe" character from the movie "AI". Or the "mandroid" from the Best Buy commercials. lol. Really, realistic robots almost here? Well that would be great. Self driving cars, I would have loved when I was learning to drive. Ah yes, I think the further along we get - the farther we are from EQ (Emotional IQ). Well, maybe they'll come out with a pill for that. Or an android. Hoverboard! Yeah! And 0 gravity room fun! You take a step and find yourself stuck to the ceiling? Oh true, like the creepy "smart" fridge that can text you a picture of it's insides. No thanks, I prefer to keep guessing if I need milk or have milk the old fashioned way

I do, too. I can't wait until they start producing it on a mass scale.

@ledante I know but I'm getting a little impatient. I first read about it maybe 12 years ago and I think it's time for it to arrive. The last report I read said that they had drastically reduced the cost but it was still too expensive so there is progress being made.

It seems that in the future there will be robots that can make a variety of delicious foods and drinks similar to famous chefs.

That's one of the big advantages of the future. And they'll do it a lot cheaper, which is another big advantage.

A Holodeck would be a good start. I could virtually turn an ordinary space into some planet out in real space and basically see things as they would appear on another planet. It would be funtasimundo I think. Setting the atmosphere to a desired temperature and humidity and add a soft breeze and sounds of the alien planet like other roaming life forms and insects making strange noises in the background. Yea. The Holodeck would be awesome. The efforts of NASA towards exploring global climate is something going on at this moment. Take a look at it when you fell like it.

I really want a Holodeck, too. I think the ice measuring lasers are great but I'm afraid they're going to find really scary things.

@xander6464 , I hope those lasers don't melt the ice more than it already has either. But as to what lies underneath is likely to be a big bit of breaking news when they make any new discoveries.

@lookatdesktop I had never thought of it that way. I was thinking it would be disturbing to know exactly how much has melted.
