Beware the Hackers

I received a notice this week that my online bank account was locked. When I phoned I found out there had been a few attempts at logging in and for safety they locked it out. Well I also get statements and don't always use my online account and also I hadn't tried to get on it recently so suspect someone was hacking. I asked the customer service person is that what they think happened. Yes, they responded, it was most likely a hacker and had no other real explanation for me.I am very careful but this is a common occurrance. So I changed my information and now the account is opened again but that was a stressful morning. This problem seems to be getting worse and really I don't trust the present situation considering how so many are on the take these days. I will definitely be on the watch now for any aggressive activity I notice. Have you ever had any attack on your credit card?

I just had one of my credit cards hacked last week, and the thieves racked up $3000 in charges. Luckily, the credit card company thought the purchases were suspicious, so they called me and asked if making purchases in another city. They were very good about handling the situation, and they shut down my account immediately and removed all the fraudulent charges off my credit card. They sent out a replacement card with a new credit card number immediately, and I received it two days later. So much for those chips in the new credit cards being any safer! Obviously, it didn't slow down the hackers one bit!

Wow your bank did a stellar job really. Two days is excellent. I also had attempts on a credit card but it was a small insignificant amount until I notified them. They said the thieves often start out with a small amount to see if it goes through and then they hit you with a big one. Nasty and they're everywhere too.

@MarymargII At work, I have a business credit card with a $10,000 limit. One day, I got a call from the fraud department at Bank of America. They wanted to know if I just bought $11,000 worth of jewelry from Neiman Marcus in New York City. I was not happy about that one, as I felt BOA didn't do their job. Think about it....I have a $10,000 limit, and they let an $11,000 sale go through. It was $1000 over my spending limit. The purchase should have been denied. Second, it's a government P-card, what in the world would I have been doing buying jewelry on a government card? And third, I live in Florida, why would I have been shopping (again, with a government P-card) in New York City? They dropped the ball on that one. Fortunately, they removed the charge and re-issued me a new card.

@moffittjc You are right about their slow reaction especially on such a huge purchase. Wow- those hackers are bold! an $11.000 dollar purchase? Crazy? It is scary how often this keeps happening.

I'm glad you called the bank about the problem and got it sorted out. No, I haven't had any bank issues yet.

Well count yourself very lucky--I've had little problems here and there over the past five years and I don't even shop on line anymore.

@just4him Thanks I'm just glad the banks are on top of this kind of behaviour.

To log into our account we receive a text message with a code, it's not easy for the hackers. For what concerns my credit card I only use it in trusted stores.

Me too and I hardly go into my online account either. This seems like someone just trying it out. I didn't like it though.

@LadyDuck yes thank goodness the banks have strict and fairly strong barriers for protection. At least most of them.

@MarymargII Most of them are pretty good to protect our data.

It is scary how many hackers are out there now, them and scammers can cause such great trouble. And we're relying on online banking more and more. A person can only hope that banks up their security with this.

This bank assured me they are blocking it and all is fine so far. I did change my log in info so hope it deters the hackers even more.

Yikes! I'm truly happy you called your bank and changed your information. I had a problem twice. I used my AMEX card in Sweden and was alerted that someone (the salesgirl in the store) used my card. AMEX put a stop to that instantly and by the time I returned home, I had a new card. Last year while in Florida, someone somehow charged movies tickets and a cola in France to my card. That was straightened out immediately and now all my cards have chips. Hope they help.

@MarymargII These thieves spend all there energy trying to steal from others instead of getting real jobs.

I don't know how they do it but they do. I also had a credit card compromised-- and I thought it was creepy how someone somewhere would do that. We got it narrowed down but it still is an awful stressful feeling.

Not having a local bank means I am doing mostly online banking. Some of these alerts are "phishing" scams of their own.

Yes, I thought of that and so phoned the credit card directly. I've been noticing a few attempts over the years.

It happened with my friend and she did what you did too. Sad but there are people who wants to get money the easy way by disturbing others who are working hard to earn money

I don’t use ATM, and credit cards and I don’t do online banking because of that issue.
