$71.50 in coins is a nice chunk of change

I don't own a piggy bank, so whenever I have coins in my wallet, or find some on the street, I put them into coin wrappers. And then when they are filled to the correct dollar amount I close them and deposit them into my bank account. I did that today. The total came out to $71.50 worth of coins. That's a nice chunk of change. Of course, $45.50 is actually hubby's coins not mine. After I give him this money, I will be left with $26. That's still a pretty good amount of money, and it will help pay my credit card bill. What's the highest amount you ever deposited in coins into your bank?

We use a water jug for our coins. Well, all but the quarters. They go into a paper cup. That is a good amount, whether its two persons together or not. We've wrapped and deposited about $85 before. Mostly quarters of course.

I've never used a water jog. I had a Hummer piggy bank but my nephew damaged it when he was little and I couldn't remember the code to withdraw the money from it. So, I don't use it anymore. Now I just put the coins in their respective coin wrappers right away.

@Courtlynn I put them in the wrappers and when they seem pretty full I take them out and count how many I have. Main reason for doing this is I have nothing to put the coins in - no piggy bank, no empty jar... But maybe I should get one.

@lovebuglena we've had piggy banks, but the jug is easier to empty out then them, lol. we wont wrap until we count it out and make sure we have the right amount.

I have a big round flower vase that has a smaller container that sits inside the top which holds my fake flowers. Most people wouldn't even know I keep my change in there. It's about half way full now. the way I see it is, as long as I have this, I can say, I'll never be broke! lol

That's an interesting place to keep loose change. Wonder how many coins fit in there...

It has been years since I wrapped up coins and took them to the bank. We used to let our sons wrap all our coins and split the money to buy Christmas presents. Our coin jar is full now, so I guess I will soon find out how much is in there.

@lovebuglena I've seen those CoinStar machines but the 8% fee was way too much for me to even thing about using one, plus they make a awful racket.

@DWDavis I love the sound of the falling change but having to pay 8 cents per dollar for counting is not my cup of tea. I can count myself for free.

One of my supermarkets used to have CoinStar - a coin counting machine. You could come in with a jar of coins, dump them all in and it would count how much money you have. And I guess then either the machine gave you the bills or maybe you had to go to the cashier to redeem. Not sure as never used it. But the machine charged 8 cents per dollar, so you were losing a good chunk of change. That's why I never used it and just did the coin wrapper things. Of course, I have to pay for those but a big bag costs only $1.08.

I've only done it once, and I don't remember the amount. Yes, that is a good chunk of change.

Probably somewhere around $400-$500. I have a coin jar that talks, so I always know how much is in there. It counts the coins for me and I just take them to the bank and dump the jar into their counter there. I know the jar will hold about $500 depending on the combination of coins put in there. The last "dump" was $350 or so. I don't use any extra money for any purpose except to invest.

I have never seen or heard of coin jars that talk. But I've seen those that tell you how much change is in it. I had a hummer piggy bank that did that. I am not sure if I can go to my bank and deposit a lot of change if the coins are not in coin wrappers. The teller would not want to count all that change for sure but would he/she be allowed to not accept my deposit? Money is money. I should be able to deposit anything.

Nothing wrong with paying for stuff just with coins. However, some cashiers would be very annoyed or upset if you give them a huge pile of change to pay for your stuff and they have to count it all. Happened to me once. And it wasn't even that many coins. But the cashier was upset anyway.

@Ladanger That's fine to do if the amount of coins is not too big. Like if you pay a dollar's worth of items with 100 pennies, as opposed to say 10 dimes, it won't be good. The cashier will be very upset.

@lovebuglena yea I try to not to pay all in change because I know it takes forever for them to count it all.

I have never deposited in my bank. I just use it if I need it. I use to keep an aspirin bottle full of coins when I worked at a store where they would steal. No one ever thought of hitting an aspirin bottle. Lol.

That's very clever, however there's not that many coins you can fit into it....

I used to have a collection of piggy banks from different parts of the world. Once in a while, I fed them with coins like when I had done a special chore. I "paid" myself in coins Then last year, the second burglars that came to my house took them all. I lost interest in coins and piggy banks.

I keep coins in a side room of my bag.In our state, bus conductors and auto-rickshaw drivers prefer coins as fare.
