Faulty school policies regarding extra curricular work

A class 2nd student's short note on His favorite TV show is liked and posted on school magazine. A class I student's usage of words makes one thing that she is a wonder kid. Some young kids' submitted crafts works are marvelous! Sounds great! But hey, these works are not done by the kids but by their parents or in some cases from expert shops dealing in Art/craft/school activity submission. So why is this the trend? Why don't the teachers make the kids do some activities - art/craft etc at school? What has a kid learnt if their parent has done something and just asked them to submit the work at school. Yet the things continue as it is and not many seem to be bothered. Parents don't talk this with schools for fear of retribution.

The teachers should ask the kids to do those crafts while they are inside the school building. The parents are not at all helping their kids.

@LadyDuck teachers are given lots of responsibilities already but they also try to put the ball in parents and srudents' court and often parents can't complain.

Hey! That was my main point of contention when marking was replaced by the grading system and CCE was implemented.

@Daljinder I remember that when I was doing my schooling ( I completed my 12th in March 1995), the only assignments we were given were on some chart papers or those black sheet colored books (trace books? - I can't recollect the name) and only a few crafts assignment. But our parents were rarely involved - we did on our own and without any pressure. I don't understand where and how this trend crept in?

@Daljinder oh I wasn't aware you are a teacher! Well I might have sounded harsh on teachers but I was more critical of the system. Yes I recall - the scrap book! What I feel that the crafts work should be fine by kids with parents' guidance and not that parents do it whole and then the wards' grades be one distorted. Or may be the parents could be called to school and graded in their art and craft ability!

@Daljinder and I also wonder how so many kids are getting very 90+ - have they become more intelligent? At our time, 90+ was a rarity and 80+ was a good score.

Sadly, this is not a new trend. I had students 15 years ago doing the same thing and I'm sure it was occurring long before that. It's one of the reasons I give very little weight to assignments and projects completed at home.

@DWDavis teachers here don't really care - if a child is not learning what is the use of things- and that is my main point!

@DWDavis well it is the own efforts of the kids and parents' efforts (often at their health's cost ) that helps. But this also leads to less respect of the teachers among children.

That really is pretty silly behaviour. Don't these parents want their kids to learn?

@JudyEv no the parents just want their kids to come 1st, 2nd or 3rd and also are fearful that their own social status might go down if kids are seen as "lacking" but schools are also expecting so much and I can't believe that the schools are ignorant.

Doesn't sound right... There will be kids whose parents are too busy working to help them with projects like this.

@YrNemo it is a market in itself and "career option" for some.

I think this is the reason why the creativity is lacking in children these days. Everything is spoon-fed these days.

@vsai2008 some students are still excelling but it is their own intellect and hard work and rarely due to the system.

@vsai2008 yes but those individual students have to work so much harder and some are prone to stress as well.

Exactly, what on earth are the kids supposed to learn?

@xstitcher well studies are important but putting extra burden on the students is not right.

@CarolDM yes but many are forced to become so because of the system.
