The School in Nigeria

Photo from of American School in Nigeria

The other day I showed everyone a photo of an American couple we know who sold everything here in the US and moved to Nigeria, along with their teenage son, to teach at the American school there. They are loving it! Tonight, I thought I would show a picture of the wife, along with some of the other teachers and their students. Apparently, this is not the way they usually dress. This is how they dressed for a special festival at school celebrating Nigeria Day. They honored their host country by eating Nigerian food, dressing in native clothing, and learning more about the country. I am enjoying her regular Facebook posts. Just by reading them, I am learning more about the country.

If only all the people in the world could live in peace and harmony like this picture then our world would be a better place to live in

@DeborahDiane That is true since the county side of Panama is similar to that region of Africa.

@JamesHxstatic It is a very dangerous country James, as many of people living there are escaping to reach Europe, I suppose it's not a safe country.

@DeborahDiane I hope so too. That is an unstable and dangerous country.

@JamesHxstatic - Yes, it was very brave and, after two months, they say they are enjoying it. However, the wife has already had a case of malaria. @LadyDuck has told me about some of the dangers in Nigeria with poor quality medical care, fake medicines, high rates of HIV, and unrest, which makes me hope our friends understand what a big risk they took in going there!

What a lovely photo and a nice group of teachers and students. I love the Nigerian styles! Thank goodness your friend is posting on Facebook. It's a nice way to see what she's up to and also a great way to learn a bit about Nigeria. Our son's in-laws are in Sicily now, and I am learning about gelato and cannolis. LOL!

@DeborahDiane Nigeria has more HIV-infected babies than anywhere in the world. Recently there were serious protests for the minimum wage and there are also political problems. Many of the refugees who come to Europe are from Nigeria.

@LadyDuck - That is interesting about HIV-infected babies. I wonder why my friends chose to go to Nigeria to teach at the American school there. It seems like a risky choice.

Oh, that’s heroic. Living in another country isn’t easy. Their way of life and culture are quite different from yours that means big adjustment.

@Janet357 - I'm sure they must be paid enough to afford their apartment in Nigeria, but I do not imagine the pay is very much compared with American standards. When the friend of one of our daughters moved to Costa Rica to teach about ten years ago, she initially earned only $500 a month. Now she earns a little over $1000 a month.

@Teep11 - I think it would be fun if we had national days for a lot of different countries and celebrated them here in the US. We would understand life in those countries better. Today was World Communion Day in our church and we had drum music with words written in Swahili and Zulu, as well as a song from China. People dressed in clothes from the countries of their ancestors, including a man in a kilt and women in Mexican, Hawaiian, Indian and other dresses. It was fun!
