How Did California Get So Much More Intelligent Than the Rest of the Country?

Yesterday evening I was out shopping, and I found exactly what I was looking for: a rechargeable light for camping. Hooray! When I got it home and opened it, however, I saw that I'm in trouble. Warning: this product contains chemicals known by the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Dang! How did California get so much more intelligent than the rest of the country? The answer to that goes back to 1986, when California voters passed Prop 65 in hopes that things with cancer-causing agents would be labeled. The problem is that, according to California and in the words of that Joe Jackson song, everything gives you cancer. Now they're requiring a Prop 65 label on coffee. (This should make some people happy that coughee isn't sold in California!) Aloe vera also causes cancer, according to them. And cocaine. I had to laugh at seeing that on the list, wondering if you turn in your supplier for not having a Prop 65 warning label on your bag of blow!!! The referenced Joe Jackson song, apparently the state song of California:
From album Night and Day Everything Everything gives you cancer Everything Everything gives you cancer There's no cure, there's no answer Everything gives yo...

Well, we call him "Governor Moonbeam" for a reason. Just because he had good taste in women doesn't mean he should be governor.....

@FourWalls Jerry is a plague that won't go away and he got to be governor again through a loophole.

Your post reminds me of a commercial I saw years ago for a toy M-16 that came with a camo shirt, hat, and makeup. The boys playing with the war toys took a small hill of sand in one of the kid's backyards. At the bottom of the screen was a disclaimer stating that the mound of dirt was not included with the other toys. I'll admit this may have been one of SNL's parody commercials like the Meat Wagon electric race track, but I'm not sure.

Sounds like a lot of dangerous stuff out there. Now I know that aloe vera is not a bad thing but boy oh boy they sure like to make people worry a lot. Will you still use that light?

@FourWalls of course and I just realized something else you'll be using the light for camping and that is outside. The reason I mention this is because I once wanted to buy a product to use in the great outdoors and I cannot remember what warning they had but also about health and I said well can I or can I not use this. The answer was that the product would not be harmful if used outdoors but harmful if used indoors. Go figure why in the world I would buy a product for the outdoors and instead use it indoors. Sort of like taking a tent and pitching it in you living room

We even have big signs on the doors to our local movie theater saying that the building contains things inside (cleaning chemicals) known by the state of California to cause cancer. So now we Californians have to heed cancer warnings just to go to the movies.

At least the birth defects and other reproductive harm won't bother you.
