Horseshoe Crab Slaughter and Buried Treasure

I have been writing about how some towns and cities got their names in the U.S. An interesting one is Slaughter Beach, Delaware. Luckily we are not talking about the slaughter of people. It was first thought that this bayside community by Delaware Bay was named after a local postman William Slaughter. Others think it was named for the many horseshoe crabs that come upon the beach to lay their eggs each spring. Due to unpredictable tides the poor horseshoe crabs sometimes wind up stranded upon the beach. This makes them vulnerable to predatory creatures such as raccoons and foxes who then slaughter the horseshoe crabs. Slaughter Beach today is great for family vacations and there are homes up for sale. Kitts Hummock is a small Delaware community which was originally named Kidd’s Hammock after notorious pirate Captain William Kidd. During the 17th century this pirate terrorized the east coast and even though later on there was little evidence that this community was named after Kidd there are still legends that claim his pirate treasure is buried somewhere in Delaware. Has anyone heard of these places? Does anyone want to go treasure hunting with me?

Treasure hunting would be my dream too. Just think of finding Kidd's treasure if there is such. Makes me remember a really comic scene in the TV series The Munsters about what happened when Herman and Grandpa found buried treasure @xander6464

@RasmaSandra If we could find a torture chamber, too, the way Grandpa and Herman did, that would make it doubly cool!

You should put it on your list. Such a small state it won't take you long just to take a look and return home @JohnRoberts
