Welcome to today's edition of history. Today has another interesting variety interesting facts including a crown, conquest, scandal, and a memorial.
First, a twenty-six-year-old is crowned king. In 768 Pepin the Short was dead, and his son, Charlemagne inherited the throne as King of the Franks. Charlemagne soon expanded his power. He founded the Carolingian Empire and became the first Holy Roman Emperor, which fused western Europe in a way not seen since ancient Rome.
Next, when I was in grade-school the consensus was that Columbus founded America in 1492. However, such was not the case. In 1000, a Viking by the name of Leif Erikson first set foot in Canada, Newfoundland to be exact. He and his crew from Iceland were the first to set foot on North American soil in what is now called L'Anse aux Meadows. A sod home still stands where he landed.
Ever wonder if sports is rigged? It seems like it sometimes with the way plays are called. Yet, in 1919, that's exactly what happened in what is called the Black Sox Scandal. Sox players conspired with bookies so their rivals the Cincinnati Reds would win the World Series. Very unsportsmanlike, if you ask me. Do you think we could play that series over again?
Closer to our history, comes a memorial for a musician gunned down in the prime of his life. In 1985 on what should have been John Lennon's 45th birthday, Yoko Ono dedicated an area of Central Park to John Lennon, giving it the name Strawberry Fields, after one of his songs.
Will today be another day of memories history will record? Thanks for reading.

As a matter of fact Columbus never set foot in the North American continent. During four separate trips, Columbus landed on various Caribbean islands. He also explored the Central and South American coasts. But he didn’t reach North America.

I'm glad there is Strawberry Fields in Central Park.
That Wolrd Series was the most interesting one.

@just4him Yeah, but I didn't go to any of the games. They wanted 35 cents for tickets. That's outrageous!

History is amazing and some of the things we were taught in school is all wrong. I'm reading about the first settlers to come to America from England and it was so awful and unfair to so many of the people that were shipped here virtually as slaves to the gentry. it makes my skin crawl.

@just4him That is so true, I'm reading a book about the settling of America and I cannot believe how cruel the gentry were to the lower class people. it's hard to read of such cruelty. You might like to read it if you ever find the time. The name of the book is White Trash and was written by Nancy Isenberg.
