Trick or Treaters Could Be Fined?

In some cities around the country they have chosen to impose some laws and ordinances. In most it is an age limit of 12 or 13 and in some a curfew of 7p. But, in Chesapeake, Virginia children 13 and over can face a fine of $100 or up to six months in jail. This is to keep young teens from doing such things as smashing pumpkins and other mischief. I hope these areas have chosen to impose some alternative activities.

Wow. When I was 7 I got mumps the day before Halloween. My brother, who was 13 at the time, did trick-or-treating for me (he took two bags and asked for something for me because I had mumps). Y’know, to some extent I can understand it, but really, are they gonna put a 13-year-old in jail??

Scare tactics I think. But now days some kids are juvenile delinquents at age 10.

I can see so many problems with this law, not the first of which is the dubious legality of threatening to jail a 13-year-old for six months for taking part in a long-standing tradition. Also, what if the teenager is accompanying/escorting their younger siblings? How will the police decide who to arrest, the tall eleven-year-old or the short, thin 14-year-old? This law is a lawsuit just waiting to happen.

Another thing for cops to keep track of. I bet they are sick of all the reasons why they can haul people off for.

I understand not wanting the children to do damaging things....but to fine or jail children for trick or treating after 7PM. I would rather an 18 year old came to my door to get some candy, than that he be discouraged from this innocent pleasure and start to do damaging "tricks".

Young teens should be able to trick or treat. Why ruin it for a few that might do something wrong.

Jail and a fine I think is too far. I went at 16. I was taking my little sister and a friend of hers, they were 9. The other girls sister was 15 and we both dressed up too. Nobody in our neighbor hood had a problem with it. It wont stop the destroying stuff so not a help there.
