The Most Unusual Home!

Canada

When looking through my parents photos I see that they camped with their friends all through their marriage. Starting so young in the photos with really old cars. I remember going to the Sacandaga River (state park) to camp with my family almost every weekend during the summer. Every time we drove to the campground as children, and as adults we saw this home on the side of the road, with a tree growing out of the roof. That tree was alive when we were children. It was a sign that we were close to camp. The house with a tree was still there...until last year. This summer we stopped at a new ice cream store for a treat and asked them if this piece of land had a house with a tree in it and they laughed. YES, they took down the tree and house and build a ice cream store. Life goes on in memories, even for a house with a tree in it. I wonder what it looked inside. Have you ever seen a house with a tree in it?

@jaboUK I felt that way too some time ago but even though I've been here less I expect to be here a bit more on the months ahead as I have time off for healing.

I’ve missed you, probably because I’m not around a lot. It was an interesting thing every year for many years and then it was gone...

It was surely in bad shape inside. I have seen many photos online of houses with a tree inside, and even built around a tree. Some are beautiful.

I like the ones that are beautiful. But this one was part of my childhood, looking for it as we drove to camp. It must have been abandoned for many years.

@LadyDuck this photo was taken in the last 10 years...We were surprised when we noticed it was gone just last year, It needed to be taken down before someone hurts themselves being nosy.

I wonder if they built the house around the tree? Or was the house abandoned and then the tree grew? Interesting.

@PainsOnSlate Are you coming to Florida this winter? We are having a shorter season Jan to mid-March but I would love to see you again.

I'm assuming it was abandoned, but it was there for everyone to see for years. I enjoyed the ice cream this summer...

I think the house and I'm guessing when it was left empty the owner might have started the tree. It litterally went through the roof as it grew. Will look for the history when I get in the area next summer.

I have not. Did they build the house around the tree? The tree looks like it's been around for a few decades.

I haven't. I wonder why they didn't get rid of the tree when it was a sapling? How interesting.

I think it was abandoned or belonged a loner that let it grow. I hope to find some info next summer as we camp.

@PainsOnSlate I often wonder why someone would just walk away from a house. There are so many homeless that need a place to live, it would be nice if these abandoned houses could become a home for them.

@HazySue this house was in a very wild area, the only reason we could see it is a highway was put nearby. Its in the Adirondack Mountains and truly a rural place. I would guess more than one homeless lived in it before it was taken down.

I wonder if someone actually lived in that house or if it was abandoned and the tree grew up through it. It looks like the roof is in terrible condition in the photo which leads me further to think it was an abandoned house. I have never seen anyone build a house around a tree but I have seen places where they build walkways and treehouses around trees rather then cut them down.

It was never in good shape that I remember, it was the tree growing out of the roof that caught my eye as a young child. I imagine someone lived in it for a long time and or it was used by hikers roof or not. Can you imagine how many animals might have lived in it when the humans were gone...

I would sure like to know the history of the house with the tree in it. It must be a fascinating story. I've never seen the like of it, though I have seen an old pickup truck with a tree growing through it.

@PainsOnSlate I wish I had taken pictures of it back in the day when my friends and I found it out in the woods behind our neighborhood. That whole area is houses and strip malls now.

@DWDavis That 's what happens when you don't have a camera with you. I would have liked seeing the old truck with a tree... but I do know when we were kids we didn't have cameras.

I love the idea of a truck with a tree, when I go camping next summer I think I'll stop at the local library and ask about the house with a tree and find out if there is info on it. We always stop at the library for their free WiFi to keep in touch with our husbands and kids. Never thought to ask.

Not like that no. I have seen a house that was purposefully built around a tree but that looks like it broke they the roof, although I supposed the cloud have allowed it to stay and not thought about what would happen when it got taller. Good that you asked about it or you would have wondered instead. Too bad they didn't get a picture of it for their shop.

I was surprised they didn't have a big picture...We realized the house was gone and the tree too but we had to asked if they were sitting on the site. A photo of the old place would be good for them and those who miss the old mess...

I have actually. A fallen tree became part of the dining table and the trunk had been squared off to become the dining table.

Did the tree go through the roof? I have a house that is covered with huge trees, I just believe they will live longer than I and will not hurt my house...while I'm living there... Sounds like an interesting dinning room...

That is something that would have really stuck out in my mind also. There was a hotel/inn that opened in the small town close to where we used to live that had a Tree Room. It was a very fancy restaurant with yes, a tree, growing inside of it. The hotel was probably there for about 20 years, and the tree seemed to live the entire time. They did sell the land and tore down the building, including the tree. Maybe the original owners were related to the people who owned this house that you know of.

There was nothing pretty about this home, I assume it was abandoned before the tree grew up through the roof. Funny, I'm pretty sure I've been in restaurants that have live trees inside too, not sure where but the memory is there.
