Thinking Outside Of The Box When Giving Gifts

Some years ago, and old friend I knew from Church, had a baby. Wanting to send her something, I looked at various florists, and decided that sending flowers was just too expensive. Also, beautiful as they were, how practical would they be? I bet she'd be getting all kinds of flowers, and they were just going to die anyway. I moved away from the florists and onto the next idea. I next went to Amazon and started checking out diapers! No baby can ever have too many diapers. I located a large pack at a reasonable price, and had them sent to the lady's address, giftwrapped, and with a message from me. She loved them, and loved the fact that I'd thought to send newborn sized diapers. Most who gave diapers gave larger ones, thinking the baby would grow by the day. This is true, but even newborns have to poop, and with A-Prime, I knew the diapers would get there within two days. Now another friend of mine was recently in the hospital, and I wanted to send her a get-well gift. Now this particular friend HATES flowers! She's not the girly type, and feels they're even more impractical than I feel they are. LOL We were chatting, and her doctor had told her she needs to eat a lot of good food, and even consume a few more calories. Having just ordered a box of Slim Jim's for my husband from Amazon, she mentioned that she also loved them. He likes a spicier variety, while she prefers the original ones. I asked her if she wanted me to get her a box too, and she loved the idea. Now when my loved ones experiences occasions in which gifts are in order, I like to think outside of the box, and not go to the traditional. What are your thoughts on gift giving? Traditional, or non-traditional?

I like your ideas! You haven't mentioned another thing which can speak against flowers. The vases! Or rather the lack of same. I've got wonderful bunches of flowers for which I had no vases in my household.

That is an excellent point, and a big reason why I don’t like flowers.

I try to give them something that they can really use.

I like to give and receive practical gifts, but I like flowers, too.

My friend had a baby in October years ago. Instead of flowers (which I couldn't afford) I bought a pumpkin with foodstamps and wrote the baby's name in black magic marker. She loved it!

Flowers are pretty, but I'd rather give and get something more practical. If it really needs to be a flower, I give a plant that can be planted outside.

I love this! Sometimes going the traditional rout can be impractical. I'd much rather have a gift that showed the giver actually put some thought and consideration into the gift. Not nocking flowers, I love getting them as much as the next person. I think gifts should reflect the recipient and by giving such a gift it shows you care.
