Glad I Saw 'Em #10 - Chris Squire

Glad I Saw 'Em. It's a musical series about musicians that I was lucky enough to see in concert, because they are now deceased. We are at #10: Chris Squire (1948-2015.) Chris Squire, in case you haven't heard of him, was the bassist for, and a founding member of English prog rock band Yes. Formed in 1968, Yes was a revolving door of virtuosic musicians (19 in all.) Chris Squire was the one constant, the only bassist Yes ever had up until his 2015 death, and played on every studio album recorded by the band during that time. Just how good was this guy? After Squire had passed, Yes finally got their long-overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For their induction performance, not just any fill-in bassist would do: the band needed someone capable of playing Squire's intricate bass riffs, and only Rush uber-bassist Geddy Lee was deemed talented enough to perform with the band. I was lucky enough to see Yes twice during Chris Squire's lifetime - in 1983, when they showed Bugs Bunny cartoons as their opening act, and again in the late 1990's, with the Alan Parsons Project. Yes was compromised of different musicians each time, but every single sweet, fat note that emanated from Chris Squire's bass was worth the price of admission alone. Don't believe me? Listen to his wicked nasty riffage in the live performance that I've linked below. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

Terrific writeup on Squire. Yes was my very first concert and was memorable to say the least. Roundabout, was a signature song of the group, and one I really looked forward to hearing in concert. That album really cemented the band future success... PS- I was fortunate enough to see the original lineup

Geez. That must have been awesome. I know for sure that the first time I saw them, it definitely wasn't the original lineup. It was the Trevor Rabin lineup. I don't think that the 2nd time was, either, although I distinctly remember Steve Howe.

@dgobucks226 - Bands like that are always better live. They have room to stretch out.

@teamfreak16 Yes, in a word awesome. I was playing The Yes Album and Fragile leading up to going to see them. And their live version of the songs sounded better than the albums.

There are some opening acts where I would have much preferred Bugs Bunny cartoons. I was happy to see Yes inducted, and so sorry it happened too late for Chris Squire. At least Ray Thomas knew he’d been inducted as a member of the Moody What-took-them-so-freaking-long Blues.

Sadly, Benjamin Orr missed out on The Cars' induction. He was my favorite part of the band.

It was quite a good show. My buddy from Denmark won tickets from work, and his wife didn't want to go, so he took me!
