Hi MyLot , here's a little break from the type of stuff I usually post. If you like it, go thank @xander6464 . If you don't like it, feel welcome to blame him. This was a little bit of fan fiction that I wrote via pen and paper in the 90s. I'm re-writing it now as I can't find the original. Ha! I know, I know, it's got lots of boy bands in it. Hey! It was the 90s! Cut me some slack already! LOL - this was inspired by the fact that I actually did like a number of songs that those boy bands put out, but I couldn't understand the waves of girls my own age who were in love with Taylor, or Nick, or Brian or.... whatever their names were. With no further ado.... I bring you : "The Mmm Bop is Out There". Agent Fox Mulder looked up from his desk and Agent Dana Scully entered their shared basement office. Fox looked a little disheveled because he had spent overnight at his desk. Again. He was working late, trying to get somewhere with the latest case involving people who had no memory of being tattooed with crop circle designs all over their bodies in a community in Iowa. Happily, Fox had been able to comb his hair somewhat and splash some water on his face before Scully showed up to work. Uncharacteristically she was 15 minutes late. Also uncharacteristically she was humming a song and skip-hop-dancing - with a large shopping bag under her arm. "Well, you're unusually pert this morning, Scully". Mulder offered. "Huh?". Scully pulled the earphones off of her head. She was listening to a Sony Discman. "Sorry!" I just discovered this great new band. Oh you just gotta listen to this.... She tossed her shopping bag on the ground and out spilled teeny bopper magazines, posters, t-shirts, trapper keepers, cds, and 100s of other little items, sticker, lip glosses, nail polish, pins, action figures, patches, all emblazoned with many popular boy band names on them. "N'Sync". "The Backstreet Boys", but mostly the band "Hanson". Scully skipped over to the under used office radio and flipped in a cd. "MMMmm Bop sha dig a dop a wah bo bop eeennny ep oh ah do wop sha dooooooo" (I'm not kidding, this is an actual song) - Taylor Hanson's vocal filled the room. Mulder cringed. It was an alright song. Kind of upbeat and happy and all. But annoyingly loud. And Scully, well, this wasn't like her. But he could play along. "Alright Scully, as long as you keep it turned down". He continued :... here's what I found out about the tattooed people in Iowa. They were all alien abductees , I think we should drive up there and investi.... Scully?" Scully broke into song along with Taylor Hanson. The song had changed ""Cause I'm looking through the yearbook, ...." all of a sudden Scully was slow dancing with an invisible partner. "Eh, Scully".... no response "SCULLY!" She rolled her eyes at Fox. What a buzz kill. "What! You're always carrying on about silly UFOs and abductees. I just want to be abducted by my Taylor..... *sigh* " So, Mulder tried throughout the day to get her to listen, to which he had varied success - finally giving up and getting to do some filing. She was quiet. Headphones firmly on. Mulder went home that night. He had to feed his goldfish. So the week wore on - and gradually Scully and turned their office into a palace of all things boy band. Mulder had mentioned his concern to her, but the more he mentioned, the more she fell in love with the Hanson and the rest. So he brought it up to his old friends, the trio known as the "Lone Gunmen". Apparently this boy band craze was taking over the country. Mostly this behavior was in pre-teen and teenage girls, but apparently, also, sometimes grown women. Some people thought the boy bands were actually government agents. But the Gunmen? They thought the boy band members were aliens. There were many photos where odd halos of light were around the guys. And somebody who had analyzed the recordings said there was a weird tone in the background, like a subliminal. Well, none of this was proven yet. So Mulder hoped that the agent's road trip to Iowa to talk to the tattooed abductees would being Scully back to her senses. Monday came and Scully came to work sans her usual pantsuit. Instead she was wearing a Hanson t-shirt and shorts. "Uh, hey Scully, that a real, uh, keen.... outfit you got there" he muttered. "Oh Fox, I know, I just love this picture of my little Taylor Waylor! She squealed. I got us music for our roadtrip! A bag with the entire discography of all of the boy bands spilled out of Scully suit case, on cue. So, they drove in silence except for the blaring of "MMMBop" like, what seemed like a billion times. Finally Scully reached over and turned the car's sound system off. Wheew. She picked up her phone. "Hello...." Mulder was hopefull Scully was coming to her senses and making a call about their case. An earsplitting shriek interrupted Mulder's train of thought. "Thank you thank you thank you thank you so much" she foamed..... So Mulder found out for the next hour or so that Scully had won tickets to the meet and greet for the Hanson concert in West Valley Springs, Iowa. She had won 2 tickets to the show, and the meet and greet. So he could go with too. Mulder really suspected something was up. Were the gunmen correct? The real alien phenomenon might be right under his nose. "oh boy Scully this is going to be really uh, great. I just love uh, Tod , uh, I mean, Taylor...." So Mulder went alone the following day to talk to the tattooed abductees. Scully begged for the day off to prepare for the concert that evening. It became apparent that the tattooed abductees were a hoax. A bunch of high schoolers looking for recognition. Their marker-done tattoos were already fading. Though Mulder noted, uneasily several of the girls had Hanson t-shirts. Well evening came soon enough, and Mulder ditched Scully - it was alright, as she was in the front row of seats and drooling literally. He crept around. Sure enough. The Hanson tour bus was pulling a trailer behind it. He came forward and 4 beefy security guards warded him off. I need to go in there, he said. It's for the Hansons safety. He flashed his winning smile and FBI badge. He was allowed to look inside the trailer, and found that other than a small table, a row of computer monitors and a weird locked cabinet - it was empty. Except for a bright green glow. Mulder re-joined Scully, he couldn't be late to the meet and greet. So Mulder and Scully got out their backstage passes and were escorted to a large banquet room behind the venue. Mulder was ignoring Scully's blathering about Hanson.... something was up here. Sure enough, after an hour's wait, in came the boys. They seemed normal. Except they had oily, shiny skin. And a faint glow to them. The crowd of girls didn't notice and the beefy security guys locked the doors and placed the locked cabinet in the middle of the room. But Mulder noticed. The popular boy, Taylor, shouted into his headset microphone. "You've all been specially chosen... to be our.... experiment subjects!" You won't remember anything that happens because of our secret technology in this very cabinet..." he punched in a code to the keypad locking the cabinet, and a green glow exploded out of it.... and when the Hanson boys stood in the green light - the light got rid of their disguise and they appeared as they really were - green aliens! Mulder reached in his pocket and took out an alien-signal disrupting flashlight. He got it off of an infomercial and could only hope it would work. He shone the flashlight into the cabinet. The cabinet and it's green glow exploded. "Boosh!" And dazed girls slowly came to their senses. There were shrieks of "They're they're... aliens!" all around. The rest of the night was a blur. In the morning, there was no trace of the Hanson boys or any of the other boy bands, either. Their homes were gone too, in their place - a ring of singed grass, like a craft had lifted off. Also - all merchandise with photos of the various boy bands, you could now see they were green aliens. When Mulder alien signal disrupter blew up the Hanson's green glowing signal - it unmasked all of the boy bands and even their images on merchandise and so forth. Scully was amazed. "Mulder, I'm sorry. I don't know how I can repay you for putting up with me and for rescuing me. I don't know what got into me. It was like I was in a trance". "It's alright Scully, even though the media is publicizing this as a publicity stunt by these bands, we know the truth and we have exposed them to those who want to believe" The agents took a few days off after the exhausting ordeal. Scully fully cleaned the basement office, keeping only a small poster of the alien-Hanson band as a reminder of the ordeal. In fact Scully was there early, getting done cleaning the rest of the boy band posters off the walls when Mulder came in to work. 15 minutes late. Uncharacteristic of him. Also un characteristic of him he did several jerky dance style leaps in the air and some off key singing. "If you wannna be my lova.... you gotta git with my friennnnnnndddddddssss" he belted. At first Scully thought it was all a joke. Then she had a real nervous feeling in the pit of her stomach. Mulder turned around. Gone was the suave casual suit ... in it's place... A "Spice Girls" tshirt and torn jeans. "Scully, you gotta listen to this awesome new band I discovered....." And there you have it! Link is to the actual song "Mmm Bop" Disclaimer stuff : "The X-Files", Mulder, Scully, The Lone Gunmen, nor any of the bands mentioned "Hanson", "N'Sync", "The Spice Girls', "Backstreet Boys" - none of those are my creation, though this story is a fan fiction using those characters.

You should watch The X-Files. It's not quite as good as this story but it's very good. The acting and writing are both first rate. And each episode is only an hour long so they won't eat up too much of your valuable time.

Ah yes, it's funny because I remember actually writing this - pen and paper - in the 90s. Or at least a version of it. It feels good to finish it now, some 20 years later. Thanks @xander6464 "The X-Files" was this great show - most episodes dealt with the paranormal. A rogue FBI agent explores odd, unexplained cases called the "X-Files". Most of those dealing with unexplainable things, UFOS, aliens, etc. His down to earth, scientific minded partner, Dana Scully, offered him some balance . Occasionally there was an odd episode here or there where it would be more like a comedy... always thought this would be good content for such an episode. But yes, I actually did like some of those old hits like "Mmm Bop", "Larger than Life",

Strangely enough, I can't recall any boy bands even though there was a time when they were allowed to roam free!

I loved this and I'm more than happy to serve as your complaint department. You really did the impossible. You made boy bands interesting and explained the 90's...I'm not old enough to remember them, of course---As far as you know---, but I'm a history buff, so I know all about them. And, speaking in my capacity as an English Major...I know, if I were any good, I'd be an English General. Ha, ha, ha. First time I ever heard that one...and a big fan of fan fiction and The X-Files, I have to say that is one of the best pieces in the genre I have ever read. Most of them are painfully bad but among the good ones, this stands out. And my love of the Paranormal has nothing to do with my critique. Thank you for posting this. I loved it. And I hope you have more.

@FayeHazel I think you might have just invented a new super-hero, Captain English. I could listen to those stories about the old days all day. It really sounds like a primitive parallel Universe. Some of it is so unreal that it sounds made-up. Like having phones that had cords and had to stay in the house and all they did was make calls? Well, I'm guessing you could put Skype on them but without cameras, what would be the point? I thought the funny episodes were the best. I think everything should be a comedy. Even with The Twilight Zone, my favorites are the funny ones. I would be very happy to all handle all your complaints, not just the writing ones. I have no idea how it could be done but if you can figure out a way, I'll do it.

Oh good, I'm happy both that you liked it and that you are my complaint dept. - ah now if someone could do that for me in every day life..... I'm happy I could accurately depict the vibe of the 90s for some young person like you who wasn't there for it. It was really quite something.... they had just discovered fire, the wheel, papyrus, and there was this guy who kept playing with this abacus thing it was something to do with math or counting. What a nerd. English General? Why not Captain English? That has a nice ring to it.... Thanks! Yknow, Not to pat myself on the back, but true a lot of fan fic out there is sort of, eh, terrible. Though one notable exception - back in the day I had pen pals (pen and paper kind) - and this one and I were huge "X-Files" nerds. She had come along some real racy fan fic about Mulder and Scully getting together. Now I wasn't a "romo" (the slang at the time for those who wanted Mulder and Scully to hook up) but this was very intriquing to me. So she mailed me a print out of it. I probably can't detail what happened, but it involved blue cotton candy, a treat which has never been the same for me since. lol. I was really hoping that this would read like an episode (one of the few cheesy humor episodes) of XF... Thank you so much. I am very flattered.

@xander6464 Captain English! Ah I wish I could better. Yeah I know, right, there was a day and time where to be on the phone meant you were tethered with a long, magical cord that would tangle everything nearby into itself … Me too! "Bad Blood" is a favorite. "Twilight Zone" is an awesome show too! Ah, I would happily make you chief of complaints dept. … if I could only think of a way. Of course I have no idea what your rate would be lol

I only watched the first season of the X-Files. Never a fan, and this was way too long for me. My time here is so limited.

@FayeHazel BSB's have all gone through a lot since the songs years ago - so their music is different than it was by being about their lives, but still okay.

@Courtlynn Hm, didn't know they're still making music. That's cool though. I know Hanson boys got married, had kids. They guy I liked from N'Sync turned out to be gay. I know Timberlake went out for a solo career - pretty good actor too

Thanks for reading it. :-) So good to find someone else who liked both things. I actually re-purchased the BackStreet Boys cd sometime back. I like it better now than I did then. Very danceable. I remember writing out a version of this back in the 90s in my notebook with a blue pen. It feels good to have finished it some 20 years later. lol
