Hi My Lot, I know I have been writing a lot about Halloween lately, however seeing as this is Halloween day I thought it would be funny to write about something else, so I thought in keeping with the theme I would tell you about one of my favorite scary movies, "The Shining". Be warned there may be spoilers. I already wrote this once - and then, seemingly as a Halloween Prank my browser window froze up. This movie is based off of a novel by Stephen King. The movie opens on the Torrence family. Jack, Wendy and young son Danny. We can tell right away that there is tension. Wendy is a timid, scared of her own shadow housewife. Danny is smart but quiet and obsessed with his invisible friend, "Tony". And Jack, well Jack is volatile, brusque, and we get the opinion that he can fly off the handle fairly easily. We learn that Jack, in an alcoholic fit - injured Danny's arm. This instance lead Jack to stop drinking. Jack is wanting to write the great American Novel, and has hence taken the job of winter maintenance man at the grand Overlook Hotel. Beautiful place, but becomes entirely inaccessible due to snow in winters. This is an ideal set up for Jack, because basically all he has to do are a few small tasks, make sure the place doesn't burn down, leaving him the rest of his time, to write his novel. The family isn't too keen on this, but are too scared of Jack to go against his desires. As Dick Haloran , the Overlook's chef , is giving the family a tour of the grounds, before he too, packs up and leaves for the winter, we discover not only that Danny can communicate telepathically with certain people, like Dick, but also that "Tony" the invisible friend shows Danny things, giving Danny some psychic ability. Tony shows Danny that the Overlook has had a very dark past indeed and that this is beginning to rub off on Jack Torrence who is becoming increasingly dark and unpredictable. With everyone else gone and winter setting in this makes the perfect suspenseful movie. I won't ruin the ending. Some trivia: Apparently King didn't like Shelly Duvall's portrayal of the Wendy character. King wrote Wendy to be a strong woman, where as Duvall expertly played her as mousy and timid. There is a sequel in novel form called "Dr. Sleep" which I think is a better book and should be made into a movie. Have you seen "The Shining"? What are your favorite scary movies? Happy Halloween! Here is a fan made trailer :
A tribute trailer I put together for one of my all-time favorite directors and movies, Stanley Kubrik's The Shining.

I don't think I ever saw it through--not because it was scary but I just don't go for horror movies unless it is "Psych"!

@xander6464 Yes, as his mother because Tony Perkins ditched me for someone else--well, I let him think he ditched me but you will have to read the book!

@GreatMartin Is there going to be a chapter about Norman Bates in that book you're selfishly not publishing yet?

Thank you for sharing. That trailer is brilliant! Goes to show what effect framing has on something. It would be awesome to find someone who hasn't seen the movie and have them watch the trailer before seeing the movie lol

I love Dr. Sleep, too. I also think it's a better book and would make a better movie. And I'm not just kissing your (something I can't say on MyLot)...That's just a fringe benefit because that's what I really think. I have seen The Shining and what are my favorite horror movies? Wow. If I had known there was going to be a quiz, I would have studied! That's really unfair but since it's a holiday, I'm not even going to point it out. Hmmm...I really like Killer Klowns From Outer Space. But my biggest favorites are the old ones. From the 1930's to around 1980. From the original Dracula and Frankenstein, Mummy, etc to all the ones made after. All the Hammer films and all his imitators. Of course, that includes all the Vincent Price movies. And I don't know if it's my absolute favorite but I really really like How To Stuff A Wild Bikini. It's very scary and heartwarming at the same time.

@FayeHazel It's my turn to be impressed cause you wouldn't believe how many girls object to that sort of thing. Um, I forgot what I was going to say now because suddenly I'm only thinking about your...Wait...Movies! We were talking about movies! I don't actually have any of them but they show up on TCM a lot. If you feel like gambling, you can just come over and we can watch whatever is on. And you can forget the soup, unless you really want to cook for hours or days or however long it takes to make soup. I can take you out before we watch the movie. If your heart is set on soup I'm sure we can find some somewhere or whatever you're in the mood for.

@xander6464 Wait, what, really? Who wouldnt like that? Crazy people, that's who. Lol! Ah yes, "newer" and newer movies seem to show up on that channel. Well, we could gamble and find some new favorite movies that way, maybe. Or I got a bunch them new high fangled what do you call em? Movies on discs..... Lol. Onion soup actually isn't too difficult. At least my recipe isn't. The main thing is slicing all those bleeping onions and the uh, "nice" (?) smell that will be in your house for a couple days following. I have no objection to going out either though. I like food! I bet we have that in common too lol

Oh cool, nice to know there's someone else who thinks like me. :-) No really I'm constantly impressed. And you can kiss my... whatever you would like .... I'm sure I won't object. I've never seen ...well any of the others you mentioned. You should loan them to me. Or better yet invite me over. I can bring Mellow Yellow. And Onion Soup. For some reason Wild Bikini doesn't sound scary, or heart warming. Maybe something else warming.... lol

I enjoyed The Shining. My favorite scary movie (other than those by Hitchcock, which are the best) is Silence of the Lambs.
