Ability vs Availability

I remember when my husband was 17 years old and struggling with the call to preach. He knew that God wanted him to preach, but he was excruciatingly afraid of public speaking. In high school, he would take a zero on an assignment before he would get up and give a speech. He had low self-esteem and self-worth because of his home life as a child. After years of my parents encouraging and loving him, he began to see himself through God's eyes. We both came from low income families, but he also came from a broken home, a family of alcoholics, and abuse. My parents helped him to see that he didn't have to identify with his family, but with the God who created him and had something great in store for him. It was through this new philosophy that he began to see that God wanted his availability, not his ability. If we surrender to God's will and His calling, He will make us able. My husband has gone on to be a pastor, ministry leader, church planter, and is a devoted husband and father. He went on to earn a bachelors and a masters in theology. I am sure that many of us can relate. Sometimes it is hard to step out on faith, but the end results leads to victory.

A saying I had forgotten about and that I came across again lately was that 'God doesn't make rubbish'. It's a good one to remember.

Wow. That's a beautiful story. Thank you for sharing. So you, and your husband were childhood friends? That's amazing. I am so happy your family was there to show him that not all families act the way his did. When you were saying how husband didn't like public speaking, I was reminded of the story of Moses. If I'm right Moses didn't like to speak in public either and yet went on to be a leader

Thats awesome about him overcoming that! Its amazing what people can really do, when they trust in God. He can bring out gifts and abilities we had no knowledge of, when the time is right to use them to help others!
