For some people self-checkout means an unlimited number of items

Self-checkout registers at the supermarket are meant for those that don't have too many items - usually 12 items or less. Apparently there are people who don't care about that and think this doesn't apply to them. They drag a shopping cart overflowing with items to the self-checkout register and get to work... at times not even knowing what the heck they are doing or how to properly ring stuff up or pay. And instead of calling for help, they stand there trying to figure it out when it's clear they are not made for self-checkout. Mind you, there is a line of other (frustrated) shoppers that has formed behind them waiting to check out...

Walmart has changed their setup for self-checkouts around here. One line for 10-12 stations. The line moves fast and no one gets stuck behind THAT person (who may or may not be me )

Why is there one line for all the registers? Is that supposed to make for a faster checkout?

@lovebuglena One line for one group of self-checkouts. There is another group at the other end of the store. One line for multiple self-checkouts means that there is no danger of choosing the wrong line and having to wait while someone fumbles with 50 coupons or digs in their purse to find 3 cents worth of change. The regular checkouts all are one line per checkout.

@SophiaMorros One line and then you go to whichever register is free seems like a good idea. I think we may have that in some of our stores here. At Whole Foods Market (thought no self-checkout) there are 3 or more lines and then the person goes to whichever register (number) pops up on the screen for the line color the person is standing in. I like that idea.

I think there should be an item limit at self-checkout, especially because self-checkout should be for those that are pressed for time.

This is why I am not a fan of shopping. I do what I can online.

I prefer to shop in stores. I hate dealing with returns if I buy something online.

@lovebuglena If you buy food online you usually can't return it. I shop in store as well but mainly the bulk items I buy online.
