TIP talk

India

The other night I was in a bar with my friends to celebrate a success party. We had drinks and dinner. After paying the bill, I asked my friend how much to tip the waiter? 100rs? Or more? He said to keep more, as it was his regular bar and he knew the waiter well. I asked him again, how much? He said, RS 500. I said, ok and I kept the amount as told to me. When it comes to tipping the waiter, If my family is with me, I will tip well and whenever I am alone, I'd love to become a Scrooge. I always think why to tip as the waiter is on a paid job. Then I recall the episodes of Ramsay's kitchen where even the tip amount is kept by the restaurant owner. It is a good sign of showing gratitude or appreciation to the person who adds value to the entire dining experience. There is value to the quality of service a waiter/ess can provide. For me the For me the behavior of of the waiter is important. But sometimes they behave so nicely that you can't ignore them irrespective of the taste of the food. Now, the bill has a service charge, still you will tip the waiter? Or it is the good mannerism or your duty towards the waiter? I heard it is a serious business in some countries... A young man and woman are sitting in a restaurant in New York, enjoying their second date. The man pays the waiter the bill and heads to the bathroom while the woman gathers her things. "How much did he tip?" she asks the waiter. He tells her. When the man comes back to the table, there is an angry exchange and she says she doesn't want to see him again. In some countries, it is a must. I tip at my regular places but not where I don't frequent. 10% is added as service charge which should take care of tipping that is not encouraged here - siva

Tips are important. In some restaurants here, the waiters/waitresses are paid below minimum wage because they expect to make up the difference in tips. I always tip.

Interesting topic. There are thumb rules to tipping that I follow. If I am at buffet lunch, then the number of persons indicate the percent of bill rounded of to nearest fifty. It is five percent for buffet, and 10 percent for regular. Much depends upon the service of course. I keep 10 percent as the maximum.

If the overall experience is poor like long seating time, long wait getting your food, food cooked improperly, etc. Would you still tip?

In the U.S. it is customary to tip around 20% of the bill if the service is good. I generally will tip 10% for poor service. On occasion I may forego the tip altogether if the service was absolutely horrid, but it's rare, and MOST of the time I tip the whole 20%.

It is not a custom here but generally 10% on the entire bill looks sensible to me. Interestingly The word “tip” is actually an acronym for “To Insure Promptness” or “To Insure Performance.” And the standards vary depending on the country.

@stapllotik A lot of people don't know that the word is indeed an acronym. Here it is customary to tip in a variety of circumstances.

@stapllotik Since you were talking about a restaurant and waiter, I wanted to say that kindness is very important and it is okay to reward.
