25 Years of Loyalty

Ya know, back in the day when you were with a company for 25 years, it was quite an accomplishment. You were respected and highly thought of and a lot of people retired from that same company. Today? Yeah, please!! My daughter started working for a company at the bottom end of the totem pole and worked her way up to be an IT Engineer for the same company. Over the years, they have had some minor lay-offs and she didn't really have to worry. Last week, the company said they were going to be laying off over 1/3 of its employees. Now mind you, you would think after working there for 25 years, you wouldn't have to worry; right????? Well Hell No!!! Yesterday they called in 30 employees and said, "Well, in two weeks, you will all be gone." Needless to say, they had to call in Security. Of those 30, most of them had been there 20 years or more. And they're not done. My daughter is in tremendous stress over this. With all those employees and more needing to find similar jobs with other companies, you can only imagine the competition to find a new job. She's only 48, so it's not like she can take an early retirement. Oh and you can bet there weren't any higher-ups or CEO's fired either.

Experience and longevity are now meaningless to companies. Long time employees like your daughter will be replaced by younger cheaper workers.

You are right, this was unthinkable in the past, but now this happens, this happens even in our country. They lay off those who are with the company from many years, to get young people because they cost a lot less. I can imagine how stressed your daughter is.

@nanette64 This is horrible, this is not how things should be done. Is this the way he is creating jobs for Americans?

I talked to her on the phone last night @LadyDuck and if it wasn't for the fact that she remarried a couple of years ago and he's a truck driver, she would probably wind up losing her apartment, car, etc.

@LadyDuck I think too many corporations are taking over those in their same field so that they can become the only one in their business.

No trade unions which can become active? Such a scenario is unthinkable in Germany.

@MALUSE That is the right way that it should be. And the US is 'suppose' to be the greatest country on the planet? I don't think so.

I'm so sorry to hear this. It has been happening everywhere to bring in the newbies for less pay. There should be laws against that!!!!

I totally agree @DianneN but can't you just picture companies having to go along with it.

That's a disgrace and seems to be trending today. Remember when the bosses would take a pay cut to keep employs working and support the community? It sure isn't like that anymore. I hope she is already job hunting despite the other lay off employees now out searching. Good Grief, Job security means nothing now.
