It's Snowing

MyLot Exclusive #67 There's not much to talk about today. It's kind of what us professional writers call an inspirational nightmare. Or as my friend Harlan Ellison put it...Well, I can't tell you what Harlan called it because of MyLot's restrictions on that kind of language. I even called Harlan this morning...Which is not cheap because he died on June 28 of this year and the long distance rates to Heaven are outrageous and Harlan refuses to take collect calls from me. He can easily afford it but he's still mad because he claims I still owe him $36 for a story I published in 1956 when I owned a now-defunct science fiction magazine. That's his story, anyway. I have no memory of owning that magazine that neither one of us even remember the name of, so how could the story be true? Exactly. It couldn't be. And even if it was, how would I come up with $36? That's way beyond my budget! But try telling that to Harlan. But that's of no interest to anyone. And I get it. You're saying, "Greg called an old friend who happens to be dead. Yawn. Wake me up when something exciting happens." And the only other topic I have is snow. And I know to that you're saying, "It's snowing in Iowa in November? This is real news! QUICK!!!! SOMEONE CALL CNN!!!" Fair enough but that's all I have for today. Well, I do have two more things. But I might as well not have them. One is a vitally important food issue that I'm saving for tomorrow and the other is the story I'm working on right now...Which is, coincidently, one of the main reasons I called Harlan. I wanted his opinion on it and all he said was, "Why are you wasting your talents on that pornographic piece of ...?" Well, there was more. Much more. He spoke at length about it but that's all I can say here. MyLot just won't allow that kind of language. Well, there is one little part I can quote, "...but you still have a lot of potential for a deadbeat bum, who happens to be a dear, nearly lifelong friend, who won't pay his bills and if you paid me the $36 you owe me, I'd probably even say you have talent. All that being said, it kind of turned me on, so what the (Word that MyLot won't allow)? If you like it, go ahead and finish it. Then send me a copy. I might even found my own magazine so I can publish it and not pay you! That would finally make us even!" And, of course, I can't even begin to tell you what the story is about. And that's it. That's all I have. Why did I even bother coming in today?

maybe you can send him a letter of apology or a Christmas card, it is Christmas anyway, you know any mail from the mail or postal is now more exciting because it is rare. is it cheaper if he takes collect call? or just the same. I hope you will find a good way to communicate with him so things will be patched up between you too. If there is anything I can do like ligting a candle of any color just tell me.

Collect calls are the same price. Real mail is an interesting idea but I'd have to go buy stamps. Does lighting candles help things like this?

Ellison was an awesome writer, penner of the Star Trek episode still regarded as the best of all, City On The Edge Of Forever,

@xander6464 yes, he was notorious - there are about ten different script versions of the story - originally the episode would have lasted three hours and break the Trek budget though so it did need cutting down - James Blish did the short story version and tries to put back in the bits the TV version cut from the scripts

It's just too bad that Harlan had such a bad experience in getting that done. He just wasn't a team player.

@arthurchappell The graphic novel version is the one that Harlan was finally happy with. He said it showed everything exactly the way he wanted. I think they should have made it a three-part episode but there still would have been budget concerns and Harlan still wouldn't have been happy because NBC executives still would have interfered. Maybe it is better that they just did it the way they did.

For some reason this whole post reminded me of an old issue of "Twilight Zone" magazine. That's a compliment :-D Hey you're interesting. Even when you feel like you don't have much to say. Is snow in November unusual for you? Are you in the Southern part of Iowa? Here it's pretty typical. A few years ago we didn't have snow in November, not until the end of December, but that is rare. Unusually early we get snow in October. Typically mid-November.

That's a huge compliment! Thank you I used to get The Twilight Zone Magazine. If I could write something good enough to get in it, I would be extremely happy. I had every copy. I wish I still had them. I'm in mid-Iowa. We usually don't get snow this early. It wasn't always like that. When I was a kid, we often had snow by Halloween and always by Thanksgiving. Now, the grass is usually still green on Thanksgiving and sometimes it's January before we get snow. This year has been a more normal winter for 30 years ago and a really bad modern one. It's been really cold most days and we had 2 inches of snow. The snow is mostly gone now and today was a little warmer but all the signs say it could be a long hard winter.

@FayeHazel No, I don't have any of them anymore. So if you stop over, we'll have to figure out something else to do. I'm impressed that you bought them. Most people don't have that good of taste. Nowhere near Sioux City. Several hours away at the other end of the state and a little south. Winters are getting much better. It kinda makes up for Global Warming ruining the planet. That is a good long hard thing to not like.

@xander6464 Oh cool! Aw you mean you don't still have the magazines? So I can't stop over and read 'em? Ah alas. I'm sure you could recite some stories to me? I found a couple in a second hand store once. Had some really cool stories in em. I wonder where mine are now. I just had a couple. Hm Mid Iowa.... anywhere around Sioux City? My dance troupe used to a Riverssance fest there. Not this year though. Oh I like your version of winter currently much better. I like long hard things. Except winters. Those I don't like long and hard.
