We got our first snowfall starting last night

We're heading for a short visit to Detroit to eat lunch with my sister and see her new place and then driving south for a weekend in Ohio for a conference. My sister usually works but had hip replacement surgery on October 23rd, so has off until after Thanksgiving. She lived on the third floor of an apartment for 35 years right after college and moved into a flat near there six years ago. I never saw that place of hers and wanted to to see this newer apartment before the rest of the family plus we go near enough to make it as valid stop. It began snowing in the night and was still snowing when we left our house. I was running behind and didn't take any pics when home so this one is in the highway. I think we may have gotten more than you see here. We may have gotten an inch and a half or so.

@MarshaMusselman wow that is terrible for your mom that she needed both hips and both knees. My grandmother broke her hips and had to have surgery on them and get them replaced. She had Alzheimer's at the time and couldn't walk on her own. I remember her care taker walking her around she was a big strong woman about 3 times the size of my grandmother and she basically held her up and forced her to talk. I remember her looking very stiff and in pain anytime she had to walk. My boyfriend's mother had her hip replaced and was back at work in no time as well. I guess hip replacement has come a long way over the years. I know my children's great uncle on their fathers side has had his hip replaced 3 times or more. He cannot have another replacement so if this one doesn't work he will be confined to a wheelchair.

@shaggin Generally, if replacements don't work out well it's because the patient isn't doing their exercises or walking. I've had many people tell me that over the years. My mom loved to dance, she rode her bike to work and she worked at a desk for years. I don't know what it was that attributed to her needing all those replacements other than genetics and arthritis. Other than dancing and exercising and doing the required exercises after each surgery for years after what was suggested she never did other exercises to my knowledge. If she had when she was young possibly she wouldn't have needed so many. Your grandmothers probably is in pain if she doesn't have anyone else that walks her around a lot to limber up her muscles after that surgery. It takes a lot of movement along with a lot of ice to heal that area. If you ever see your children's uncle you might suggest to his caregivers that they get him walking more even if time has already gone by. It will be a benefit to them as well if he can be more mobile.

Whoops, I didn't realize I wrote knees there, I've since changed it as she had a hip replacement, not knee and she'll be returning to work just a few days past a month after her surgery, whereas I took of three months for mine, the recommended amount of time. Arthritis runs in our family, but possibly I'll be healed from that one soon. My mom actually had both hips and both knees replaced. I'm hoping that once my wound gets healed that my knee won't need surgery after all. Sleeting, that's about as bad or maybe worse that snowing. Watch yourself if you have to drive about this next week.

Does your area of the UK normally have snow or not, Gary? I know that some of the mylot members expect snow most times while others do not. It may have been Barry that expected snow and maybe that was a big reason for his many holidays in the winter month.

The further south we went the less snow there was on the ground and in the air

@leny34 Only to the southern part of Ohio, not to the southern part of the usa. We are already back in MI and home again, Sunday night. Normally, we'd be getting ready for work tomorrow but both my husband and I have the day off.

Seeing the sun today would have been helpful because we missed a turn in Detroit and went quite a distance out of our way before I realized we'd between driving on the wrong road. If the sun was out hopefully i'd have noticed it was on the wrong side of the road

@MarshaMusselman it used to be a lot earlier but it rarely snows until January now - up to late March

@arthurchappell January to March would be a lot better than now through April. We always get at least one good snowstorm in the middle of April even after the spring flowers have bloomed and after we've had some decent temps. After the last several years, though, anything can happen. Whether it's due to global warming or not, I've no idea, but we have cold months and then warmer months and many times they are opposite of what they used to be. So, I always hope for some warmer days, weeks or even months mixed into my winter.

When is it common to get snow around there, Arthur? And then once it comes does it stay the rest of the winter or can you get rain or snow some months?

Not yet, I don't know what's expected in our city but I know it's supposed to snow several more days next week too. Are you getting it too?

I woke up yesterday to see it snowing outside but nothing stuck. It melted as soon as it hit the ground. We do know it will show up with a ton very soon, but I hope its calm until we head south after Christmas.

Where do you head to after Christmas, Marilyn? *(I had to tug on my brain for a minute there to come up with your first name, but I think that's right, right)?

@PainsOnSlate That's cool that you or he has family you can also visit with while there. I'd love to be able to be a snow bird and maybe that is in my future or maybe we can actually move to a warmer climate one day in the future. I think I asked you a similar question possibly on your post, but you don't have to answer there too, this suffices. Thanks.

@MarshaMusselman We go to Florida and like the gulf side best, and Marilyn is my name Marsha. We stay here until Christmas is over for our kids and then leave. We used to drive but as we age we prefer flying. He has family in the middle of the state so we visit them for a few days before and after our seaside vacation.

@MarshaMusselman So, how was the flat? Was it icy on the roads?

I'm not sure what the flat looked like that she was in the previous five/six years, but if it's like her current place it's a large home in detroit that has a staircase in the front door and both residents can access the basement without going through my sister's place which is on the first floor. The roads weren't icy, no, but there was some ice on the steps leading up to her front door. The first step was large but didn't have any railing, but the rest of the steps had a good metal railing that didn't shake when used. A big plus traversing through snowy steps. We didn't run into any icy conditions. We woke up to snow and even though we left fairly early/nine am ish, the roads were clear. I did get a picture of her back door which goes out her extra room and which she doesn't expect to ever use for that very reason.

They cold comes and goes here. Today was 26f but with the wind chill felt like 16. Friday it's supposed to be in the forties. Next week back into the low twenties. Sorry, I've never gotten the hang of Celsius comparisons
