Education is free here from junior kindergarten, age 4, to grade 12.
Parents can choose to send their children to private schools, but they pay for that.
University and college education costs, but I believe that it should be charged.
People take too much for granted so paying for a degree helps students and parents take things much more seriously.

While it's a lovely idea, I don't think it is feasible. There has to be a revenue stream for the many expenses so I don't see a free higher education working. Thankfully, there are scholarships, and even better, pell grants. Not everyone can get them, which is why paying for education can seem so impossible.

I thought education was free. If not, then where are all my taxes going?

That might be nice but someone has to pay the teachers, the cafeteria and the books and such. Most cities collect taxes to pay for public schools which after available for most kids
Are you talking about all countries or what, Fredo?

I grew up when it was free .Until my M.A I did not pay a penny and even had a grant to live on for my University days. I wanted the same for my children, but things had changed by then. To have been born as a fifties child was to live in a time of great privelege in the UK.

in my opinion it will indeed be better if education is free ... because for people who are not able to enjoy education properly ... because many people cannot enjoy education because they are unable to pay the very expensive tuition fees

I think it should be free for all but the larger degrees beyond an A.S. or B.S. pay. It would help those who want to go to college and can't. It would help those families that have little and yet made to pay for meals, supplies and more. Even with low cost or no cost meals, some are on the boarder of it and can't. It's frustrating. The lottery can stop paying out those huge millions and add more to the schools. People will still play and win.

@amadeo They give some but not enough. All those millions and even a billion being won when all that could help the schools. Can you imagine what even 500 million could do. The Mega was a billion dollars. The winner would still be very wealthy if half of it went to the schools.

Why should it be free? Teachers need to be paid, authors need to earn a fair wage for writing books...

@amadeo I agree that university is ridiculously expensive. However, professors still need to be paid, facilities cost money to maintain. No one is forced to go to university and, in all honesty, our universities don't do a particularly good job of preparing the average student for responsible adulthood.
And there ARE economical ways to get a degree. Choosing to go to school in State and choosing not to live on campus are both good ways to keep costs down. Plus there are grants and scholarships that go unclaimed because students don't make the effort to find out what's available.
