Good morning mylotters I hope that this post finds you all well. Yes I know it has been a while since I posted but life has been far too busy of late to allow me tie to post but fortunately I forgot to turn the alarm off today so at half past five it was rudely woken on my day off. So to catch up life has gotten in the way work, social life and decision making. My wife and daughter have been in nag mode about me working too hard and about never resting and always being on the go. They have complained that life is too short to keep going like this and have been pleading with me to retire. I had plans for my retirement which was to be a couple of years away but recently I must admit I have been so tired and spending five hours a day just commuting back and forward from work is a ridiculous amount of wasted time. So a couple of weeks ago I went to the beautiful island of Cyprus for a relaxing holiday and five out of seven days I did absolutely nothing which also gave me time to unwind and re evaluate my lifestyle and I have come to a decision. I am going to retire. On my return to work I spoke to my manager and have decided to retire. I am aiming to retire on the 31st of March We have to give four months notice but I have given five months just to be on the safe side! So a few people are happy with my decision, my family and me although I must say I do love my job but my colleagues are disappointed that I am finally going. They have asked me to stay on part time, they have offered me an exciting new job which I have said no leave it for the youngsters to do. I have done 40 years in this job it is now for some me time. I am sure I can find other things to do to fill the void and my time especially gaining five hours a day from commuting one of which I hope will include a bit more time here. Tomorrow is quite a significant day it marks the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War One. The moat at the tower of London has been lit up at night with 10,000 lights which last for around four hours. Sunday as ever culminates with a service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall where wreaths are laid by the Queen, Senior members of the Royal family, Ambassadors from the Commonwealth countries and Senior members of the Armed Forces which is followed by a march past of veterans. This ceremony takes place all over the country in Cities, towns and villages. We will wear our poppies with pride to remember ALL those taken by war. There have been services held around Europe over the last couple of days as the war graves. Mrs May has laid a wreath at the grave of the first and last soldiers killed in World War One. This evening sees the annual memorial service at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The photo is of the tower of London lit up with 10,000 lights.

Good morning Gary. You are a wise man and this is the right decision. Stop working, enjoy life more, stay with your family. They are right, life is too short and 5 hours commuting is really wasted time. I am sure that you can find a part time job near you if you feel the need to do something. Tomorrow we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI, the Armistice of Compiègne, I would have liked that my country would have done something more to remember those who lost their life for our country. Two brothers of my grandmother never came back.

@garymarsh6 At 16 they were called in Italy, in fact they were called "the kids of '99 (1999), when they joined the army in 1915. It was not a choice, it was mandatory to go. One of the brother of my grandmother was the youngest in their family, he just turned 16 when he received the card to go to the front.

Many youngsters lied about their age to get into the army. They were only 14-15. I visited the war graves in Thailand one Christmas day and it was like a kick in the guts seeing so many kids 17, 18 etc killed out there. We laid flowers on behalf of those families who never got the chance to go and see their loved ones.

So why do many members of the Royal family wear multiple poppies? Just wondered if there was any significance to it...

@garymarsh6 I saw that, proposed by one of the daily newspapers - just wondered if it was based on fact, or more fake news...

@pgntwo No I don't think it is fake news the Queen has always honoured the armed forces! I remembered it from a few years ago.

Yes I think she wears five poppies that represent the armed services. The Army, Navy and air force also for the civil defence and the last one for women.

One thing many retirees here do is volunteer in the community, I don't know if that is done over there also, but that is also an avenue if you're concerned you may get bored or something. I planned on waiting until I was 70 to retire and for me that's only four years away, but I've had to go on sort-term disability and there's a possibility I'm supposed to consider retiring earlier than I've planned all these years, but that still remains to be seen. In the mean time while I'm off and when I'm not elevating my feet we hope to get involved in the community this winter while I do have the extra time. It's better to retire now than to wait until your body decides you're waiting too long and forces you into it with some health issue. I'm sure you will soon wonder how you ever had time to do everything before as I know many retirees still don't have enough time in their days. I've never heard of a five hour commute before. I'm sure this decision will bless you more than you foresee right now. For one thing at least your family can quit worrying that you'll work yourself to some catastrophe.

Thank you for your lovely words that is so kind of you. Yes I would like to put something back into the community i have a few ideas I am toying with but I also have plans to travel while I am able to. It will be great to spend a bit more time with my family. The mad thing is when I started working there many moons ago it used to take 30-40 minutes to get to work now with the traffic it is 2 and a half hours each way. What a waste of time eh.....It is this that is the decision maker for me really rather than the job,. I love my job but perhaps I will find something useful to do more local. I am keeping my professional registration up to date so I can always do some professional work if I need to. I don't envisage getting bored I have too many things I still wish to do.Many people do some kind of voluntary work. My wife works in a charity shop I don't think I want to do that but certainly something along the lines of helping people with dementia (My speciality) and combating loneliness. Good luck to you when you retire! Hats off to you I thought you were around my age too!

@MarshaMusselman I think I must volunteer as I feel guilty taking a salary now for something I love doing! Daft though it may sound but I know we have bills to pay. I have already started to look out for stuff to do one thing involves the elderly setting up an anti loneliness club of some kind.( Thats if I can persuade a church to allow me to use their hall for free. I would like to do all sorts including health checks speakers card games tea and coffee to combat loneliness and isolation.,

@garymarsh6 So are you the same, older or younger? Not that it really matters. You work with dementia patients at your current job? I'd think that places in your area could use some extra help and maybe even be willing to pay for it if you want more than volunteer work.

Hi, Gary. I know you have made the right decision for yourself. 40 years is such a long time and your daily commute of 5 hours is more than anyone should do. I know you will love retirement. Just think of all the traveling you can do! Your photo is lovely!

I am glad you have decided to retire. Believe me, your life will quickly fill with things you enjoy doing and you will wonder how you ever found time to work. Five hours is commuting is just too much time which is really pretty much wasted. Remembrance Day is big in Australia too and there will be poppies all over the place tomorrow. I love the photo. Thanks for putting it up.

It's good to know that you have decided to retire. I love it when people make decisions that they think would make them happy. And you giving them a 5-month notice speaks volume about you. I love the picture! Omg, it's just so lovely.

The tower of London is an iconic building and perhaps if you ever come to London you too will visit it as it is a must visit place of tourist attractions. The crown Jewels are stored here.
