Veterans Day Poem

No one can understand; unless you were there, the horror and fear; that they all share. Gunfire and bombs all around, as everyone would drop to the ground. Every day you would wonder when, it would be your turn to face the end. Due diligence and the mission were priority one, as you possibly saw a comrade lunge. Our soldiers come home; those that survive, carrying the caskets of those who have died. The men and women of our armed forces, trying to help those with little resources. Veterans Day is a day to remember, but every day; not just in November. Salute those who try to do right, by trying to save every life.

100 years ago the 11th of November (1918) the Armistice of Compiègne signed the end of WWI. Both my grandparents and many of my uncles were at the front, some of my uncles never came back home.

@nanette64 There was no choice in Europe, they were called by their government and they had to go.

You are welcome @JudyEv . I wanted to join the Marines back in 1973 but because I was a woman and had a young child, they wouldn't let me. My son joined but he is now gone.

Good to know. There are online stores here who had up to 90% discount. I am not sure if it has something to do with the Veteran's Day.

That is such a good poem you wrote. I try to not forget the great sacrifices of our soldiers that have enabled us to have the freedoms we cherish today.

Thank you @LeaPea2417 . Freedom unfortunately is bought with lives and not common sense by the leaders of the world.

My dad was a medic in WWII and told me such horrible stories and saw so many people die. Being a medic he was on the front line and did many things that were above and beyond. He came home with the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and 4 other medals. My grandfather was in the Marines and the Coast Guard. After being home for awhile after the Marines, he re-enlisted but in the Coast Guard. My brother was a Marine and did his time in Lebanon when the fighting was going on. Now my grandson who is 21 is in the Navy and just shipped out to the Persian Gulf. We have had many nerve wracking times through the years and they all said they would do it again even after such horrible experiences. God Bless our Troops. We wouldn't be here today if they were not there to take care of us.

I thought at first that this poem was about the fire in California, but a few more verses, and I realized my mistake. Hope you are well. (I forgot completely about this 11 of 11 this year.)

Every time there is a war, innocent people die on both sides. The men with power are behind their desks; the young soldiers are sent to die.

I can only imagine @Tampa_girl7 . A lot of people don't realize just how devastating it can be to see what they have seen.
