At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 100 years ago today, This day that we in the United States now know as Veterans Day was, for decades, known as Armistice Day. The Great War ended. It was not called World War One then. People the world over thought the horrors of The Great War would be enough to convince the world never to go to war again. The Great War became known as The War to End All Wars. Unfortunately, they were wrong. Just over 20 years after The War to End All Wars ended the world became embroiled in a second World War and the habit of numbering World Wars was born. Sadly, it was the treatment of Germany by the victors in the wake of the first World War that planted the seeds of the second, at least on the European continent. There have been countless lesser wars in between and since World Wars One and Two and many soldiers have gone to their graves believing they were serving the greater good Many millions more served and returned home to pick up their lives and become productive citizens of their nations. Others, so damaged in body or mind, were never completely able to escape the horrors they witnessed and even participated in. All returned changed. It is to those men and women who went off to serve their country in uniform that this day is dedicated here in the United States and that is why the name of Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day for us. We honor our veterans today because as the song says, "All gave some..." https://youtu.be/RWbj1dfDIoI

Those of us who've worn the uniform and stood on the line understand better than most.

@DWDavis I always forget that your father served as well. Even though I know he did. When did he serve?

100 years ago, today, the war ended with the Armistice of Compiègne. I still remember my grandfathers and uncles telling me about their difficult conditions at the Italian front. Many never came back.

If only the war that ended 100 years ago today had truly been The War to End All Wars.

@DWDavis I fear that there will never be a war to end all the wars... unless there will be total destruction and no more humans.
