Oh Oh! Be Careful of That Driver Window!

It seems that after all those years of the driver-window shining its warm rays on the left side of my face is catching up on me. In the past I have had to have a few of those pre-skin cancer little rough patches burnt off with liquid nitrogen so I go each year to get it checked by a dermatologist. However, those specialists seem harder to come by lately or even those ones that are really good. Anyway apparently they missed a little mark and now it has become a spot of basal cell skin cancer. Not to worry, they say it is the mildest form but however, now I have to go to a special clinic in Toronto, Ontario to get it removed. And it's at 7:30 am that all patients must arrive! I will have to get up pretty early in the morning to get there on time. There's alway something! I know that you can get sun damage through a window- the only thing you don't get are the tan/burn rays or even the beneficial Vitamin D rays but you do get all the skin damaging rays. I used to joke and say you may as well roll your window down and get a tan while you're driving cause the UVA/UVB rays will get you anyways--haha! And they did! But I'm sure the left side of my face is now paying for all the years I have driven around without sunscreen. I have been using it the last few years though. Sun damage is cumulative so wear it all the time. And take Vitamin D especially in the winter!

The sun through a windows is dangerous, because it's hotter. I hope they can fix your problem. Take care. The best moment to store Vitamin D is in the morning, when the sun is less dangerous.

allow your time for this. You do not need much to get it.

@amadeo Walking twenty minutes in the morning sun is enough to get enough Vitamin D. I do not stay in the sun when it's too hot and bright.

Yes, I had the spot removed although at the moment I do not know how large is the scar. It seems a bit longer than I expected and I'm to use Vitamin E on it.

Yes, this is what they do so all should work out just fine.

I hope things will be fine soon. Sun exposure is beneficial but we need to be careful about being overexposed from it.

@MarymargII I agree. Even small babies cannot even stay under the sun after 7 o' clock in the morning

@Tampa_girl7 Yes, it was fairly quick but I had to go to a neighbouring city to a specialist.

Living in Florida, skin cancer is a big issue since us Floridians have abundant sunshine all year long. And I have a lot to worry about, since I was an avid sun worshiper for many years, and also because I am currently the aquatics director for our local municipality (which requires me to be out on the pool deck pretty much on a daily basis). I use sunscreen all the time now, but unfortunately the damage is probably already done. I do go to the dermatologist every year, and so far so good, but even he says I will probably start having things show up in the next 10 years or so.

@MarymargII I've always wondered that myself. Why doesn't the damage to our skin show up immediately? If it did, everybody would take skin care a lot more seriously!

Yes I am paying for it now and I live in Canada! haha! but we all love the sun when we're young cause it feels so good! Wonder why those bad spots hide until we're older and then show their ugly heads--- weird!

I'm sorry you have to go through all that and so early, but it's true that basal cell skin cancer is easy to treat. My brother had that. I wear sunblock all the time, even on cloudy days.

@MarymargII I do use Vitamin D on days I’m not outdoors. 15 minutes of natural sunlight is all we need, and I get plenty of it on parts that don’t have sunblock.

@DianneN Well we're into our Winter here and sunshine gets scarce but I do hang out around my car after shopping to catch a few rays whenever I can- or go out front---- but I do take Vitamin D daily and sometimes 2 in the Winter.

That's the best and so do i--- what a day that was and I am worried about scarring although they assured me it was only a small spot. If you are wearing sunscreen all the time- you should take Vitamin D as well. I am now taking it every day especially with our winters. haha!

I think some skin cancers occur whether we spend time in the sun or not. I've had skin cancer removed twice (same spot). The doctor told me, that's from baking in the sun.....I promptly informed the doctor, I NEVER bake in the sun....and that spot is very rarely exposed to sunshine.

That is a shame that they missed the spot first time around. I had a skin cancer check about a month ago but they didn't find anything so that's good.
