This afternoon we are going insurance shopping. We both have Medicare and are looking for a low cost or no cost secondary insurance. We are tired of so much money going out for insurance and are ready for some help. For instance - out of my check comes the medicare payment ($104 per month), the secondary insurance ($203 per month)plus prescription insurance ($67 per month). I am not happy about $307 a month coming out of my little medicare check. So we have an appointment this afternoon to see what we can do about it. It's sad when a couple ends up having $614 a month taken out of their check. Hopefully they will be able to help us some this afternoon. It's a shame when you work all of your life and end up having little of nothing to pay your bills during the "Golden Years" of your life. Is anyone else having this problem? I am pretty sure there are many out there in this same situation. I'll let you know what happens.

I hope you opt for an Advantage Program. We have United Healthcare Advantage and it cost $26 a month and includes prescriptions.

Do you pay anything for your prescriptions at all.

@HazySue Yes $3 for some and the max is my husband's Mybetrik which cost $45. You would need to check the formulary for the particular insurance to see what they will cover and for how much. Office visits are $15 and specialists $40. plus we get $500 worth of dental care. Also Silver Sneakers, a lot of coverage for $26 a month.

I'm on Medicare and have stuck with regular Medicare as the best option. I don't want an advantage plan. When you talk to the insurance person, be certain you get the complete picture from both sides of Medicare. Know your options, and good luck getting a lower price.

Actually I have a supplement and am looki8ng for another one that I will pay less for. It is so expensive and I practically live at the doctors so I need really good coverage.

@HazySue You need a supplement when you're on Medicare. I hope you found a reasonable one. One thing I did before I went on Medicare was to talk with the people at the Senior Center here. They have a program where you can see all the plans and choose the one that's best for you. The one I have is with United Health and has a very low deductible and I'm on regular Medicare, not the advantage program.

The Health Insurance is pretty expensive here, but it is necessary. I think it is unfair to pay so many taxes.

@HazySue I agree, you cannot work anymore, you earn less, you pay a lot. Nothing left in the wallet after you have paid all your bills.

I'm definitely curious to see how you make out and hopefully you can lessen your payments and get better coverage. It's crazy how much we have to pay isn't it

I am still waiting to find out. We only had part of an appointment and had to fill out more papers and stop on the way home at another office and fill out papers. It should take about two week for us to know.

It does seem unfair to pay taxes and work hard all your life then end up with very little to live on when you're older.

You do need to start preparing way ahead of time or you get caught in a tidal way (so to speak).

My sympathies. After looking for homeowners insurance and car insurance, I think buying a car isn't as stressful or as scam-laden. And health insurance? You can change that once a year....but if they want to change the rules in the middle of the year, they'll do it and poo on you.

You are absolutely correct. They do what they want. I am so tired of fiddling around with health insurance. Just when you think you have it all figured out they change the rules.
