Do you think senior citizens should retake their drivers test?

I think by the age of 70 yrs. old that they should. Some are very clumsy and dangerous on the road. What do you think?

yes, i think that once they hit a certain yr. maybe 65, they should have to take the test every 2-3 yrs. my grandpa had to after he had a stroke, and he failed, but he still drives, cause he doesn't want to ask others for rides, he and my grandma like to feel independent. he's aware of the consequences, my mom has told him multiple times not to drive but he's so hard headed, he does not listen, we just pray for his life and every 1 he's on the road with!

Yes,I do.I know how bad my Dad's eyesight got and he'd be looking at something to the side and just kinda start going toward it.And run right up on the back end of the car in front of him 'cause he had a 'blind spot' in his eyesight. It was terrible.Luckly we got him to stop driving before anyone got hurt.

You bring up a good point. Aftr a certain length of time (whatever that may be) people tend to get lax - or comfortable - with their driving and the habits (good or bad) that they have developed over time, so that I'm sure there are many people out there, that if they had to retake the test, would not pass. If you move to North Carolina, you HAVE TO retake the written test - even if you have a valid license already - no if's ands or buts about it. You'd be surprised at how many people fail it and have to retake it. I remember getting 7 [out of 50] wrong - which was the most you could get wrong and still pass, and I was surprised. I guessed at a bunch of questions. (It had been 20yrs since my original test.)

ABSOLUTETLY!! If not, a complete driving test than at least ask them to drive around cones to test their co-ordination as well as reflexes.

yes. i think an actual driving test and thorough physical exam is necessary. i'd be more critical on the latter part though. a long time ago i rode in a car with an elderly man driving and he was suffering from intermitent micro sleeps. it was scary because he'd doze off and abruptly wake up. its not as if he's fatigued but simply poor health or age was catching up on him. another incident was with a different elderly man who wore eyeglasses. while driving during the day you won't notice much of his inability to see clearly, however, at night all is hell. his depth perception is week and he can hardly distinguish on coming vehicles whether they are near or far, and fast or slow moving. i think its our responsibility to remind our elderlies of these factors and consequences. i hope so too that this presents as a reminder for us that when we reach that age we'd be more understanding and less stubborn.

I think everyone should have to retake the drivers test maybe every ten years. Laws change often.

I feel that from approximately age 65 forward one should have to repeat the drivers test. Many people by this age are on several prescribed medications. These medications can severely alter reaction time, make one sleepy, make one dizzy and so on; yeilding a driver who is less than optimal. Sadly, many people, of all ages, are taking prescribed medications with similar side effects. When these medications are being used, one should voluntarily give up their driving but we all know that will not happen! Please let me add that I do not take this stance as a way of being unfair/discriminatory to those age 65 and over, just as a safety precaution for them and all the others on the road!

I agree, I think they should have to retake the test. After so many years of growing old, you begin to lose your eye sight and hearing. Very important things for driving. Not the mention you generally aren't as fast thinking so reaction time is slower. Again, not safe. I just feel older people should take it over again to make sure they are keeping themselves and others safe.

I think everyone should have to re-take their drivers test every 5-10 years. I swear people completely forget the laws after they have had their license for awhile. I get cut-off, flipped off, and have to take manuvers to avoid an accident on the road by more middle aged people then I have ever a senior citizen.

Absolutely I think that they should be retake their test. Many of them are very set in their ways and think that their driving is fine after so many years, and they refuse to acknowledge that they're slowing down.
