After listening to 'The Book of Life' audio books I decided to give the TV show a go. It is given 8.4 on IMDB which is an amazingly high score but I can't say I find it quite so good. They seem to have rushed through it so quickly that you don't feel any attachment to the characters. If I hadn't read the books I don't think I would have any idea what was going on. Also there are some really annoying changes that have been made from the book that I can't get my head around. Diana - The main character is really well cast and exactly as I would have imagined her. Matthew - The first 2 episodes I thought he was awfully cast, he was acting so over the top, intense and serious. He is growing on me a bit but I think the way the show has been so rushed that he just seems strange and a bit psycho. Marcus - In the books Marcus is Matthews lab assistant and son, he is a good person and a respectable scientist. In the show he is some unruly brat out causing mischief. Satu Järvinen - Satu shows up later in the books and does some awful things, but in this she is already in it at the start, and something that happens that makes her seem weak and a victim, she is meant to be pure evil. I really don't know where they are going with it. Gillian Chamberlain - In the books she is someone that Diana never wanted to bother with, and someone that gets her in trouble later on. In the TV shows she has been her friend for 10 years and is trying not to betray her. Shaun - In the books Diana went to University with Shaun she knows him well he is one of her oldest friends, in the TV show she goes on a date with him and he is asking her about her family like they have only just met. These changes might not seem like much but they just don't make sense, I don't know why they change things this, it makes it so much harder for people who have read the books to enjoy the shows because it changes how you feel about the characters. Have you ever watched a show that was made from a book you loved?
